Re: Balsa USA 1/3 scale cub help

Hello MIck, I have a Balsa USA J3 Cub plan. I can't scan it as its too big, however I think I could scan the bulkhead former or at least trace round it and scan that, if you still need the information. There is only the bulkhead former in front of the broken nose section shown in your picture and fr...

Re: Fuel proofing help needed

Tom, The matt is very matt so would advise getting both matt and clear, then do test patches with a mix until you obtain the results you want. Klasskote can be sprayed directly on to wood to protect the areas in the engine and fuel bays which are most susceptible to attack, however another method is...

Re: Fuel proofing help needed

Tom, There is only one fuel proofer than works for glow fuel and that's KlassKote. Its a two pack paint so the colours are fuelproof or if the clear is used its equally effective as an overcoat. Its available in matt or gloss and its best sprayed but can be brushed though it goes off so quickly its ...

Re: Servo wire?? (not 3 wire flat)

Dave, If you find that the 24 strand wire is too difficult to work with (the insulation fits in some connectors easier than others) then 16/0.2 will be the next best thing, this is still thicker than ordinary servo wire.........and still cheap! Where possible I prefer Mutiplex connectors, they are m...

Re: Servo wire?? (not 3 wire flat)

Maplin is as good a source as any with all the colours of the resistor colour code. 24/0.2 will just fit into the connectors so will give provide maximum mechanical strength and all the current carrying capacity you will need. The cable can normally be bought in 10 metre packs, or 100 metre reels, I...

Re: 1/10th scale Blackburn Beverley.

Malcolm, To ensure alignment, and that each wing half is the same, why not build the wings on a flat board. You can pack up the spar so that its level and the bottoms of the ribs just clear the board, then cut a tapered strip of wood which will sit under the rear edges of the ribs. This way all the ...

Re: 1/10th scale Blackburn Beverley.

Malcolm, With looking at the pictures of the tailplane, it appears as if its being built using ply. If so, it is going to add unnecessary weight. I don't know the actual size, but guess the tailplane is 5 - 6ft span. Imagine it as a wing suitable for an aerobatic model, most builders would not const...

Re: 1/10th scale Blackburn Beverley.

Malcolm, You'll find it much easier, both at the building stage and then at the field, if you put the elevator servos in the tailplane and the rudder servos in the fins, with a short straight rod to each surface. The servos will then stay permanently (mechanically) connected and all you will have to...

Re: 1/10th scale Blackburn Beverley.

Malcolm, If you need to add weight to balance, put it in the nose - as far forward as you can get it. Achieving the right CG is all about moments so if you put the weight in the engine compartments you will need much more weight than what you'd put in the nose. Also if the weight is in the engine co...

Re: Programming servos.

Dave, the procedure with the programmer I've got seems to be the same as the one you have. It appears with mine that once the centre and end points have been set and provided I've exited the function by pressing 'input' (which then moves the programme on to the next sequence) or by switching off, th...

Re: Programming servos.

Dave,

I've just tried the end point function on a HFP-20 programmer and found that I had to switch off the programmer before unplugging the servo, just unplugging results in the memory not being held.

Re: Contact Adhesive

Malcolm, Litho or to give the full name, lithoplate, are the sheets of malleable aluminium that were used in printing newspapers and the like before digital reproduction came along. Unused litho, ie the flat sheets, can still be had and are great for reproducing certain cosmetic detail, I'm currentl...

Re: 1/10th scale Blackburn Beverley.

Malcolm, Gaps are generally bad news especially in stressed areas and cyano is not a good adhesive for joining large surface areas. It will readily wick along the grain but not so readily across it and you usually have little idea how far the glue has travelled into the joint. For glueing ply to ply...

Re: Contact Adhesive

Thanks for the replies. I'll go to a builders merchants. Its not for large areas, I want it for window framing, although there's rather a lot of it. The problem I'm having is that once 1/4 strips of litho are applied, they will still move about a bit regardless of how much/little adhesive is applied...

Contact Adhesive

Does anyone know of a decent contact adhesive for sticking lithoplate to ply. I've had good results in the past with Evostick (red tube) however the new-and-improved formula is anything but.

Re: nylon covering

Just to add to Alan's reply, nitrate dope stops shrinking once completely dry, it's butyrate dope that continues to shrink - here's an interesting article: https://www.awm.gov.au/media/conference/bigstuff/papers/treatment/nitrate.pdf. Non-shrinking dope will shrink to some extent so if you've manage...
