OK, be interesting to see the final result, for sure the volume of air is not as important of where its directed and expelled! I had to sort out a 200cc flat for last week with baffles...I could get three fingers between the cylinder heads and cowl...air doing nothing!

Keep on it, like I said your workmanship is top draw

Terry Jessop wrote:It's looking fantastic well done. I'm building the all wood version could you post some more detailed photos of the aileron hinges please.

Here you go terry as promised, sorry i'm not better at photography.

This is the inboard made from 6mm ply,the bushing (nylon tube) is drilled at the same angle as the aileron spar so it moves correctly, the aileron ribs (either side of the hinge) are 3mm ply and are now reinforced with proskin and an l shape steel pin slides through the lot.
It works really smooth with no play.

This is how the aileron looks with the modified ribs to suit the hinge points.

And outboard, again 6mm ply, both hinges are glued with hysol to the corresponding ribs at the hinge points and extend into the wing roughly 4cm.

You can just make out the inboard one here before gluing,it is cut the shape of an H and locks between the upper and lower TE spars.
The outboard only locks into the lower because according to the plan the top spar ends before it gets to the hinge.

No problems here.

Just don't build the root angle to the plan it's a mile off.
I attached the ribs to the tail and built straight and level from there.

Ancient methods.
I have no fancy means of leveling so i use water :) :)

Made a few mods to the horizontal stab,i wasn't keen on Mick's fastening method which is vertical countersunk screws through an alloy plate, experience tells me it would wear quite easily.

so i went for the old angled bolt(same as the wing)

There's no spars as such in the stab so i just had to cut the light 2.5mm balsa TE from 3mm ply instead for peace of mind.

And lastly, before sheeting i felt the need to beef up the elevator control horn mount with balsa stringers(i don't like it when things are all twisty.

OH! i almost forgot,i added another hinge,three's better than two :) :)

Its more the capacity to run 9 mins plus, it will need 5000 mAh. Then next question is will the motor cope with that heat wise?
EDF units like that are used to running in cool air and for 4-5 mins.

Glad the servos will be suitable :-)

Well Dave,i tested the fan duration at 1/4 throttle today on a 3s 3000mah and it ran for 25 mins before the 3 cells dropped to 3.6v each so if the fan cools the engine at a quarter then it should be fine though i think i'll take your advice and rack it up to 5000mah just in case.
You know how it is tuning on the ground big scale taxi's ect.

The fan draws cool through that big pipe and throws it into the shroud which is tight to the fins all the way around the engine and at 1/4 throttle it seems like quite a large volume of air coming out of the shroud.
The hot will exit via dummy exhausts.

Mick's exhausts are easy enough to assemble and look pretty realistic`

Rob
just been looking back through this thread and noticed that your ducting around the motor is on the opposite side to the carbs. This means that the carbs will be drawing in hot air heated by the cylinder heads. This is not an ideal situation as motors work much better if the carbs are fed cold air. Feeding in hot air, especially if there are temp changes in the air at differend throttle settings and airspeed could lead to eratic running of the motor. I had this problem with the motor in my big Tiger moth until I got cold air to the carbs.

thanks John, yes i've come across the same issues myself so i have planned to configure cool air for the carbs like the mustang.

here you can see the carbs have their own intake chamber,l might just have to make the intake slightly bigger on the spit (not scale) i know but it's a necessary sacrifice i feel.

John
how did you solve this with the tiger moth? any pics?

I fly a moth minor with this issue but can't decide how to sort it without lopping a load of cowl away.

cheers

On my Tiggy the ducting takes air in through the scale inlet at the front of the cowl and then directs it through the fins . The carbs are above the ducting and draw cold air in from the atmosphere. sorry, no pictures until next time I take the cowl off !?

I bought the Monforton drawings when they still offered printed plans @ 1/4 scale........I'm sure I still have them stashed somewhere Rob, so I'll have a look. You're more than welcome to borrow them if I can find them as all parts of the seat were shown to allow you to build an accurate replica.
