1/2 Scale GeeBee R2

Postby david clarke » June 22nd, 2017, 6:18 pm

Thought it was time to reveal my latest project,GeeBee R2 50% scale 150" span,The model came to me about 2 years ago from Glenn Masters the owner,it was initially built by Paul Hughes and Glenn many years ago,the fus was framed up with some sheeting on but I resheeted most of it as it had degraded quite badly. The wings were pretty much done I just had to modify the hardpoint for the rigging wires, the rigging is heavy Bowden cable, the rigging is tentioned with the uc strurts, each one has an m5 rose joint on each end one right hand thread and one left hand thread, the uc was scratchbuilt out of 18 x 3 mm flat bar and stainless tube, all works very well and was sighned of by the inspector Ian Redshaw. The engine box was made from 3/8 marine ply and the firewall 1" marine ply needed to mount the gorgeous Moki 400.After weeks of filling and sanding all the sheeted areas were glassed and the open structres were covered in Diatex, the whole model was then painted in cellulose paint, stencils from flightline graphics were then applied and the whole model was clear coated with 2k automotive laquer. The model has now gone as Glenn chose to fit the gear himself,i will update when taxi trials and maiden flight take place.

Many thanks,Dave.

Further to Daves post, I would like to put some background into this very long-term project . .
Years ago, I had a mad moment and suggested to friends that , as i'm a Gee Bee freak, what a good idea it would be to have a half size model of the R2 ! Thinking it to be a pipe dream, I didnt give it a thought until Paul presented me with his drawn up design and plans to actually build it . . Mr solutions stuart then proceeded to supply copious bits of wood and Paul started to undertake the initial build. the results of this project were briefly displayed way back at a Haigh hall seminar. After I had sourced spats and cowl mouldings the project was put on hold until other items including the Moki engine eventually being available. Having chatted with Dave, he agreed to take on the finishing build, which involved some tricky jobs to actually bring it all together. I would like to acknowledge the considerable help from John Braithwaite with his skills in welding and fabricating the landing gear. Dave has certainly carried out a great job in getting this difficult project to its current stage. All thats left to do is the radio installation, engine runs etc, and final paperwork for flight testing . . . Its the last bit that has my b@ttu%ks clenching a tad !!

Yes, embarrassingly I missed Davids name off the credits for the post on the Langar facebook page, so will have to redo it. Apologies to him, Paul and Glenn.
