Re: Wood suppliers

I actually found the lime nice to use, but I did build much smaller models then and used it as a hard balsa substitute or where I needed loads of bendiness. I tend to build all sheeted models bow with glass skins so much of the time the stringers are just to keep the balsa and glass sheeting in shape.

Re: Wood suppliers

Straight white and a stable grain sounds a lot like white ceder.

Anyway, thanks for the replies, seem a lot like a consensus of opinion. next wood order I will get some as a sample.

Re: Wood suppliers

Contact Stuart at Solutions - he does some timber in 6 ft length, mainly cyparis. Stuart@solutions. 01207 544414 Thanks, but What the heck is cyparis? I used to be a cabinet maker and have never heard of it. Had a look at a few UK model shops via google and cyparis runs out at 2.20 ish for a 6 foot...

Wood suppliers

Hi, guys, Years ago I used to use lots of lime wood stringers from a uk wholesaler called Samoso (I think he was called mr Kaitenbrauer or similar) beautiful straight grain, and about the weight of medium to medium hard balsa. I found some 2.5m long Obechi that was almost as good from a local suppli...

Re: Scaling up plans.

Kate Just a thought. You might wish to consider scaling up to suit the propeller size of your engine, the largest diameter it will comfortably drive. Scale models look real with scale size props but look like model aeroplanes with noisy, high revving, small props! Don I agree , Scale prop size is o...

Re: Scaling up plans.

Phil, yes, help by PM was useful, as was a few others. Thanks to all of you, size looks decided now, I have to look at 500 other things before starting. A very long term project for me. As for the P51, it is a Don Smith kit, Sierra retracts, fuse is sheeted and built up to the point of engine instal...

Re: Scaling up plans.

Arthur, thanks for the response. Please do not look at my gender and make assumptions of my abilities based on stereotypes. Been flying RC since I was 10, building free flight models since I was 6 and and have built probably a good 50 RC models over the years from plans alone, from rubber band indoo...

Scaling up plans.

I am just looking at a feasibility study of scaling up an existing design to fit a specific engines. It is a twin engine civilian design. At the moment there isn't even a prototype of this model flying or even complete which doesn't help. The engine size would be 166% of the size of the original des...

Re: High Temp Epoxy

The engine is for an aerobatic plane, so all weight loss is important. if it was a warbird I wouldn't care. I can't afford to buy a 3W 275CS so I am stuck with using this. I bought a 240cc 3W because at the time I lived in a country with a 25 kilo and 250cc limit before needing an exemption certific...

Re: High Temp Epoxy

Thanks, Tony and Alan, Great help, I will check out those sources out. I had assumed that I would have to make a mold that would act as a jig for the thread inserts. As for machining, whle i have access to a home made CNC and a small hobby lathe that will do to make a prototype or 2 ( or 5), the fin...

Re: High Temp Epoxy

JB Weld is rated at 550degF cheers, but not what I am after. Normal epoxy resin has a much lower continious heat rating. I was after a laminating resin, you know, the kind of thing you put under pressure and cure at high temperatures, I doubt a JB Weld crankcase would last long enough to even machi...

High Temp Epoxy

Hi, I have a small idea I am testing out, in theory it should work, a Carbon fiber composite crankcase to save weight on a brick of a 3W 240, the DA 200ML has shown that magnesium is too soft for the job. Does anyone know a good UK sourse of high temp epoxy? I think I need something that is OK to ab...

Non UK pilots at UK Model airshows.

First, hi guys, Newbie to the LMA here, long time lurker though, so please excuse me if this is in the wrong place or this question has already been asked. What are the rules for non UK insured pilots at UK model public airshows? LMA and non LMA events. I will have a French FFAM ( equivilent to the ...
