Re: MEISTER Republic P-47D-22-RE Thunderbolt, Step by Step B

Unlike a boxer twin engine, an inline positively benifits from a 2 into 1 manifold as the alternating firing stroke allows a burnt exhaust charge to exit and be replaced as each cylinder fires 1 after the other. I found that a header of about 25mm is needed with each cylinder header the same length ...

Re: MEISTER Republic P-47D-22-RE Thunderbolt, Step by Step B

My advice would be to be careful about adding too much operational detail at the expense of extra weight. Nothing kills a successful flying model more than if it gets too heavy to enjoy. Operating intercooler slats would be great for bar-stool detail, but you would be hard pushed to notice in flight...

Re: Ian Pottinger

I did hear that Ian was unwell, but this is a shock to us all. Ian was one of the good guys, a key member of the Catton mob. He always had a kind word and had a welcoming manner. It wont be the same team without Ian - My thoughts are with both his family, and his extended family at the Catton Group ...

Re: Scrutineering

Well said Rob, I think you have made perfect sense of all of it. And I think it is worth mentioning that a vote of thanks is in order for all the willing helpers who have freely given their time for flightline checks (better term than "scrutineering") It is a thankless task that is all to ...

Re: Warning!

I have been following this thread with interest and I have to say that John is right about the initial compression of the wood fibres on our propellors. The principal of compressing the wood on a full-size propellor would indeed be cause for concern, but our props are much smaller and will be subjec...

Re: rear carb intake chokeing

The servo method is best Alan. you are right about the difficulty of the servo to operate the flap. the solution is to carefully remove the choke flap from its rotating spindle, then carefully remove the spindle from the carb body. Take care to watch that the ballbearing and spring doesnt jump into ...

Re: Air tank

Hi Paul, I have always found it better to leave the valve alone and carefully drill onto the base. then just solder in a brass tube. 1/16th id. I think - then solder on a next size up piece on the end to affectively make a barb. Anyway, a Gee Bee with retracts is cheeting ! cheers Glenn

Re: Tillotson carb

Hello Barrie, I would try two things on this engine. Firstly, the difference in the way it runs will almost certainly be the reed seats (I assume it has a reed block assy) The thing to do is to turn over the reeds so they are pressing harder against their seats. The engine should make a "parpin...

Having enjoyed more Haig halls , Wigans, and indeed Gaydon than I want to think about, The thing I notice the most is how we all seem to want to pack up and clear off so early in the day . . I guess distance does become important if we are only there for a couple of hours. Cant say I've witnessed th...

Re: 3W-60 What ignition voltage?

If its the old style ignition (red white black wires from the crank sensor) its 4.2v. The later ignitions require 6v. The earlier 4.8v ignition units do not like 5 cells. Hope this helps . . . regards Glenn

Very sorry to hear about Colin - He was quite a character. It wasn't unusual for Colin to administer many and various "rollockins" at the pilots briefing during a weekend at Muche Marcle ! (all for the best of reasons of course ) My memory highlight was at the end of a terrific weekend, ba...

Re: Polystyrene Pig (Byron Christen Eagle)

I remember building one of these models way back - Byron Models were cutting edge stuff back then. they are a pain to build but you will be rewarded with a good flying model. Use wing skinning epoxy as a fuel proofer - liberally coat the inside of the tank bay as fuel spillage takes no prisoners. I ...
