Re: An Update on the UK Regulations for Model Flyers

So long as the regulations stick to the word "drone" rather than "unmanned craft", there's no reason to suppose the regulations so worded apply to us. A "conspicuity device" is a bit odd, transponders are really too heavy to for to most drones, not to mention very power...

Re: An Update on the UK Regulations for Model Flyers

hmm...A Robin DR400 (F-GSBM) was descending on base leg to land on Runway 20 at Shoreham when its right wing struck a radio-controlled model glider. The Robin suffered minor damage and landed safely. The pilot of the Robin had not seen the glider and the pilot of the glider had not heard or seen th...

Re: FN5 turrets for Wellington

Bit of a red-letter day here, as I fitted a matched pair of pneumatic rams to the rear-turret, and now the whole lot of moving parts can be seen operating albeit with the guns driving the rams rather than vice versa! Tomorrow I should be able to do the same on the front-turret, afterwhich there's &q...

Re: An Update on the UK Regulations for Model Flyers

I used to instruct fixed-wing at Shoreham, where in the 90's there were frequently RC gliders and aircraft ridge-flying on the approach to runway 21 (as it was then) and I must have done hundreds of approaches within 200' or so of these. They never gave us any trouble or cause to worry, and as far a...

Re: An Update on the UK Regulations for Model Flyers

Fully agree. The whole mess has come about by the conflation by the CAA/D of T, of regular fixed-wing or simple rotary (standard helicopter configuration) with the multi-rotor drones, which are in almost every comparable respect, chalk and cheese. This is the equivalent of the regulation of speed-bo...

Re: Electronics whizz needed, Oxfordshire area

Hi all, This is by way of an "AAR" to the posed questions. I eventually went with two SMC pneumatic double-acting pneumatic rams, with flow control valves (needle-valve restrictors) to slow the extension and retraction rates which would otherwise be more on/off than analogue. I intend to t...

Few more pics. Please excuse the rats-nest of cabling, it'll all be tucked out of the way eventually!

Re: FN5 turrets for Wellington

The last few days have been busy in the workshop: First I've been assembling the acid-etched brass straps which will hold the Perspex panels of the windows in place, and the rear-turret is finished, in that the outside straps are in place. Still to do is to bend and fit the internal straps which are...

Re: Convair YF2Y-1 Sea Dart

Absolutely cracking work on the harnesses and seat, I love the wear and tear on the floor pan. it's actually hard to tell one is looking at a model. I fully agree about the SLS nylon being tricky as regards layer-lines, especially where compound curves occur, I've found multiple applications of prim...

Re: Wellington build thread

Steve, I've all but finished the CAD work on my turrets, and could now spend a day or so drawing up the 12 and a half frame (immediately aft of pilots head) as either a single 3d printable part, or, as printable component parts. The latter is much more time consuming, as unless the geometry of your ...

Re: Stolen Van HJ 61 NJU White ford Transit

I am so sorry to read this. I've just been looking at ebay entries, and it's possible to filter search results that are "pre-owned". I believe it's the case that it's not uncommon that when stolen vehicles are sold, they're sold as "collection only", but there's no actual link be...

Re: FN5 turrets for Wellington

A couple of new films up on YT, showing the Polish/English caution stencils and some footage of the new gunsight with automatic dimmer wired in. Apologies for the camera-work on the latter. The strap brass for attaching the cupola windows has now been ordered, and wiring in the various electrical se...

Re: FN5 turrets for Wellington

Hi all, the last couple of days have been spent building the internal structures of the cupolas, and hanging the front-turret doors. Some gap-filling is required, a little trimming and some remedial painting, before moving onto the rear-turret doors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3mgS9NKpSk Today...

RAF Mk III gunsights 1:4.5 scale

For sale on ebay at https://www.ebay.co.uk/mys/active Full details thereon. I apologise for the asking price, but they went through several iterations to get right and I'd like to recoup some of the money spent doing so, however they may be "just the ticket" for one of you...? The auction ...

Re: Electronics whizz needed, Oxfordshire area

Probably cams, I would think. I really need to talk this over with someone, prefereably in the workshop where the problem can be viewed in the flesh so to speak. I now know that both rams need to be driven with identical force applied to each. If this isn't done, the asymmetric effect greatly adds t...

Re: FN5 turrets for Wellington

I've put a couple of new films on YT. The first is a look at the lashed-up Cupola structure. I can't proceed further with that until the brass parts arrive which will stiffen the members. The second film - slightly truncated due battery failure - shews how I attach SLS nylon parts together with mach...

Re: Electronics whizz needed, Oxfordshire area

Hi all, I now need to collaborate with someone in the North Oxfordshire area to help design and build a suitable servo-driven mechanism to raise and depress the gun-cradle on my model FN5 turrets, and to traverse the turrets. The previous "home-made" elevation servo, completely concealed w...
