Re: 20%VULCAN

XA894 had five Olympus engines including one with reheat and mounted in a pod under the weapons bay. It was destroyed in a ground fire at Filton in the early 1960's.

Re: x2 z38's model suggestions

Let's try again! OK. It looks as though that image has loaded.

It's all water under the bridge now but my suggestion for a Zenoah 38 twin is the Airspeed Ambassador. It's English, beautiful, efficient, and not military.

Re: spin recovery or not

Or put the old way:- 1. Unstall the wing (=stick forward) 2. Stop the rotation (=opposite rudder) 3. Recove r (=lift the nose) The application of power gives greater effectiveness to the elevator and rudder at low airspeeds but is not an option with sailplanes! For most conventional aircraft central...

Re: Airborne Video

Guys this is an interesting thread for me. I would still like to know more about telemetry - can the operator see what the Phantom is filming in real time for instance?

Airborne Video

What a superb video from Mark Hinton, recorded at Cosford and on the site front page. This has it all; great image quality, outstanding stability of the camera platform in flight, no exposure funnies as the camera "looks" ground to sky etc. Please can we know more? What kind of aircraft (q...

Re: large scale aircraft COG balancing

Richard - I have tried to upload an image having a .BMP extension. It refused this so I inserted the image into a Word blank page which then had a .docx extension. I then tried the bitmap with the extension reference removed. When I go through the attachment procedure here it all seems to happen unt...

Re: large scacel aircraft COG balancing

Richard, suggest weighing it at each main and the tail wheels with an appropriate platform scale. It must be level for each weighing which involves a block the same thickness as the platform scales (for the main wheel not currently being weighed!) plus a deeper block for the tail wheel. You then nee...

Re: Amps or Air for 1/4 scale Wyvern ?

In full size aircraft we called them WOGS - "weight-on-ground switches". They detect the oleo extension at take off and enable retraction, armaments, full radar power etc. On digital logic aeroplanes like Eurofighter the cockpit button function and its caption change so that there is no up...

Re: what glue to use on spruce?

Alan - I have just had a look at the British Gliding Association guidance for repairs online. They say a 15:1 scarf and they use Aerolite 300 which seems to be Aerolite 306 powder mixed with water plus a matching hardener. As you are associated with the aircraft industry you may be able to source a ...

Re: What is this aircraft please

Many thanks for that Alan. I have these photo's taken by my dad and myself from way back. This little set has a Spitfire, Hurricane, Heinkel 111, Me109 of some description, and this one. All have some kind of spray over the transparencies so they were being preserved at the time. They may date from ...

What is this aircraft please

With silence on the raising of the Goodwins Dornier "the only remaining Dornier 17 in the world" I have become intrigued by this photo in my collection. It's one of a series taken on Horse Guards Parade in the 1950's. If it is a Dornier where is it now?

Re: Gloster E28/39

According to Wikipedia, E28/39 refers to the 28th experimental aircraft specification issued by the Air Ministry in 1939. Glosters response was the Gloster G40 and there are quite good drawings of the G40 in http://richard.ferriere.free.fr/3vues/3vues.html - might be worth a look?

Re: Fun stuff goes here.

My dad used to declaim:-

"Alcock and Brown flew over the ocean,
why they did so I haven't a notion.
Alcock was pilot while Brown kept the log.
And when they reached Ireland they fell in a bog."

Any one know where this came from or if there is any more to it please?

Re: Servos mounted in the tail???

More on pipe organ mechanisms. This picture shows a "roller board", in a Flair Fokker DVII fuselage, to take a throttle linkage vertically from a servo at the bottom to the carburetter height near the top. In this case the torque rod is hardwood dowel which is light and stiff enough in thi...
