I've sorted the problem (rough running, poor starting). It was in the joint between the crankcase and the reed-valve frame. The original jointing compound was failing allowing leakage around the reeds.
Cleaned-off the old compound and re-jointed with 'Universal Blue' (Hyalomar) - available from motor factors. It is a sealant/jointing compound that is impervious to virtually all industrial fluids and works up to high temperatures.
The substance has an interesting history. Developed by Rolls-Royce 40 years ago for sealing joints in jet engines, the patent expired 20 years ago and RR stopped producing it. A German company obtained the rights and now make it and sell it all over the World.
Why don't we make anything anymore --------------?
