DA 50 or DA 85??

Postby Mark whiteley » June 6th, 2010, 5:52 pm

Guys
looking for some advice on engine to put in a CARF Spitfire
wingspan at 104"
weight around 33 lbs

In the bumf the recomendation is a DA 50 withs Pitts style muffler, but several of the Longhorsley members seem to think it may be slightly underpowered
Does anyone have one of these models and can pass on advice?

Also looking for the engine so if anyone has one please let me know

you can always throttle back, you cannot open it up if you havnt got the Gee Gees, 50 sounds small for a comp spit at that size

DA 85 all the way, your going to need the nose weight anyway. 33lbs !!! More like 38/39lbs. My 88" Spit comes in at 35Lbs, it has 5 lbs of lead in the nose, despite building the back end as light as possible and mine is the Mk 24!!

Cheers

Andy

Yap DA 85, brute of a motor. will suit it perfect. 50 would fly it but not like a spit should be!!
