Mike,
You need to be careful about the foam because there are different types. The best for model making are the closed cell foams with a very small cell size. I got mine form this guy selling on Ebay. He is buying larger sheets and cutting them up (they are sold for house insulation but you have to buy £150 worth at a time). Here is a link...
http://shop.ebay.co.uk/02robbo/m.html?_nkw=foam&_sacat=0&_odkw=&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3911.c0.m270.l1313

This foam is superb and cuts/sands to a really nice finish.

Cheers, Andy

Careful with the blue foam you can buy cheap from builders merchants.......this is often a very 'rubbery' foam that when sanded drags big lumps out (OK for hot wire cutting wings though)

If you want a nice closed cell sandable foam for making plugs etc....'IB Styrofoam' from Sheffield Insulation. It works a bit like 'Oasis' used for flower arranging, but is MUCH lighter.

In agreement with Phil, blue foam will tear quite easily, when sanded.
Also on health and safety, both foams vent an inert gas when sanded, so good ventilation or better still some form of extraction system is desirable.

I got some from panelsystems.co.uk. You get it mail order in different sizes. None too cheap though. I used it for making moulds.

Found some really light high density pink foam at B and Q made by knauf.

only around 1.5" thick but it will do the trick.

Back again on this issue.

B n q have thoughtfully stopped selling the pink foam. Any one know of where I can get pink foam from?

Locally around Manchester?

Find your local branch of 'Sheffield Insulation'..............or any large industrial insulation firm for that matter, they should have various blue, pink & yellow foams.

I can cut you pieces that size (out of a 4" thick sheet) at work if you want then.

Hi Paul

If it's 4" I would only need 2 pieces. As then I could cut them in half and get 4 pieces if you know what I mean. How much would you want for them?

Thanks

Mike
