Propeller pitch values

I understand the various measurements of propellers with the diameter and pitch as a numerical value. I don't understand the alphabetical value of pitch on some of the large diameter propellers. For example, I'm looking at the moment at 24" prop but the pitch is either A or B so therefore its either 24 X A or 24 X B.
How does this work? Can it be compared to a numerical pitch value?
Many thanks
