Your advice please on balancing a spitfire spinner

Postby Philip Goff » August 18th, 2013, 10:55 pm

Dear All
We are having continual problems with exhaust and prop bolts becoming loose on our Yellow aircraft Spitfire XIV
The only thing I can put it down to is the spinner which is quite large and has an extremely heavy back plate.
The spinner is of the type where it is fixed on with a series of bolts round it's extremity.

I have no idea how to fix this or the tools to do it.
Can anyone help with this please.

Thank you.

Regards Phil Goff

Phil I'd be very surprised if its the spinner cone that is causing vibration.
If it is an even moulding and looks consistent in thickness it's unlikely.
The problem is with any mass and weight which may be your backplate.
A machinist would be able to balance that for you and also see if it was running true.

Dear Mike
Thanks for your advice my good friend Dickie Scarbrough is going to get his mate (machinist) to sort it for me.
I will be delivering it to the nationals at the weekend.

I thought i had answered this in a lengthy PM Phil? did you not recieve it? i was wondering why i had not had a reply, your problems in the centre hole, and the prop cut outs, unless when it was machined, the operator did not get the billet true when machining the inner and outer diameters
