Perhaps this may be of some use. The caption is:- A rare Spitfire PR.XI seen at IWM Duxford some years ago, in its high-altitude blue scheme and American 'star and bar' markings.

Good luck, Tony Collins

Hi Adrian,
The Spitfire in question is it the MkVIII HF ? If so, there's a free DVD with this months Aeroplane Monthly and there is actual footage of the MkVIII high altitude fighter. The colour scheme looks like standard RAF fighter colours - it's certainly not PRU colours.

Neil

Hi Guys,
Andy, that Spitfire is the wrong variant - the Mk VIII HF was fitted with a two stage Merlin not a Griffon engine. It also has extended wing tips & pointed rudder - well that's what the video footage is showing, anyway + commentary, too.
TTFN,
Neil
