Zenoah 38 fuel mix and recomended oil.

Postby martin collins » September 27th, 2017, 6:15 pm

Just getting back in to petrol powered planes following a 5 year break from them, what fuel/oil mix are people using on their Zenoah 38 engines and what oil seems to suit them the best?...............Martin

I have used 32:1 since getting mine years ago. Castrol Power 1 Racing 2T oil is my 2 stroke oil of choice and non super market fuel. Works OK for me. Also a 18x10 prop. Hope this helps

Thanks for that, are you using the higher octane fuel, many petrol stations offer a standard and a higher octane version?.........Martin

Stihl 50:1 oil at 50:1 and the cheapest unleaded the supermarkets sell.

Just the ordinary octane. The g38 manual says 32:1 so I've always used 32:1. My Evolution engines use 32:1 so it's useful just going with one fuel mix.
Also I use a NGK BPMR6A plug, it depends what plug cap yo have though.

I use a measuring bottle such as ebay 201954980758, fill to petrol line, add oil to 32:1 line and shake to mix :)

:o I have one of these. Be careful and check the volumes. The one I bought the 1 litre fill line is more than a litre! I checked against several measured jugs

I have run many Z38's for years on Stihl oil 35:1 using 19 x10 wooden props. Never had an issue and use the same oil mix for all my engines over 25 years.
I use a kitchen measuring jug 1/4 pt to 4.65 litres approx unleaded petrol from local garage. It has been said that carbon can build up using these mixes - ignore that it doesn't happen over many many hours of usage.
Just my twopennorth

I used to use Stihl but have now gone to Rok oil, fully synthetic. But you dont need 32-1. I have three Z38s two over ten years old and flown regularly that have always been run on 50-1. I put 100mill of oil in to a can, go to Morrissons and put 5 litres in the can.

I use a clear baby bottle to measure the oil, its small enough to carry in your tool box and has a scale on the side. 50:1 on zenoahs.

40:1 using Bel-Ray. Can go to 50:1 but like the safe option of more oil. Had too many 2 stroke failures when on the oil/fuel limits!

50:1 on BelRay & regular supermarket unleaded on all my Zenoah's........and I fly HARD in prolonged full throttle Warbird slots.....never had an issue.

40:1 on a new engine for the 1st gallon......drop to 50 after that.

More oil does not mean safe.......Zenoah's are industrial derived engines from chain saws and the like, in this environment, they are run far harder, in a harsher environment than a model aircraft & rarely if ever get cared for by their owners. High oil content will just gunk up your engine, give excess mess from the exhaust & reduce your power output. A failure of an engine such as this will be far likelier due to poor installation/lack of cooling that low oil content. Oil does not cool your engine.......air flow & fuel do that.

Phil
