Computer Scams

Postby Vince Raia » September 1st, 2012, 7:01 am

After reading the other post about a mobile phone scam hoax, I thought I would alert people to a GENUINE SCAM that is happening, and which was tried on me twice!

A person from Asian origins phones and tells you that your computer has a virus that is affecting other computer, so they need to access your computer down the line to clear it.
This is a scam to access the information on your computer, whereby the operating system is completely buggered up and you will have to get it all reinstalled. My cousin works on computers and has had customers that this has happened to which has completely messed up their computer.

So if you get one of these calls, (which I have had two of) and they are very convincing, like most con artists are, I told them to P@$$$$**%%.

There are also age old emails circulating saying there is a virus that will light an Olympic torch which will burn up your hard drive, it is a total hoax and utter crapp, delete it!

They treid this on my Mum who is in her 70's. She had the forsight to say that if they can tell she has a virus on her pc then they should know what make it is and what versions of windows she has. They put the phone down. They also ask for bank details to set up DD's for regular virus checking. All a con!

Hi Paul, good on here, and yes that is the other aspect I forgot about, that they ask for your bank account details and do extort money from you. In fact I had another Asian phone call yesterday, the number read out on my phone came up as "0" funny thing is, a lot of these callers always seem to know your name?? I just clicked the phone off!

Yes I'm on that one too, it's called: Telephone Preference Service, (TPS) Tel: 0207 291 3320 or http://www.tpsonline.org.uk

It's FREE to register and will reduce unwanted cold callers.
