Doug Rigby

Postby Alan Cantwell 1131 » May 25th, 2014, 10:31 am

Sad to report that i had a phone call from Dougs mate, Phil Ogden, that Dougy passed away last night, more details as i get them, sad loss, Doug had a great presence on flight lines, his creations, mostly scratch built hiself, where always a joy to see fly, he had just got back on the scene, even though he was not a well man, he strived to not give in, he had his problems, but he was model aircraft, and LMA right through, he will be sadly missed

I got a call Sunday morning from Doug's brother, he died in hospital Saturday night after been rushed in with breathing problems, I only spoke to him on Thursday when he rang me to say he had received his paperwork from the CAA for his new 2/3 scale BD5, even so he was very ill he was desperate to get out and test fly it .He was building large models right to the end, I hope he's up there now sorting out a new building room for this next projects. He will be greatly missed

The news about Doug is very sad, he was a real character at LMA events. When Sheila and I did TX control at the shows, he was so keen on flying as much as possible that we gave him an extra large transmitter tag (35Mhz of course) because he kept on losing the standard ones. He and his remarkable models, proper aeromodeller aircraft built from scratch, will be missed.

It was on 66, I believe Dave! He even called his second owl that. Yes, a character.

I'm glad you remembered Doug's owl Bob, here is a pic from our Ramsgate Model Show, about 1992 I think, Doug with his owl along with Ken Bones and a toy owl he bought from one of the traders and Simon Steggall with his owl. Fond memories!

Doug's last model he built before he died was a 66% BD5 , he sadly passes away without seeing it fly so today Andrew (doug's brother ) ,Dave (doug's close friend ) and myself took the BD5 out for it's test flight . We had 3 faultless flights ,Doug would have been very pleased with its performance . I loved it and am now the new owner of it ,so it will be soon seen around the shows .

Shame that Doug didnt see it fly, he's most likely watching from above.
