My local airport, Manston, is about to be closed. The owner of the airport, bought a mere 3 months ago for a nominal sum, promised to give the facility a couple of years to try to make it profitable. Last week the owner said it would close within a couple of weeks without warning. This airfield, as you enthusiasts will all know, is an iconic Battle of Britain site with a wonderful museum of the era but apart from that it is also a busy cargo hub for several freight companies, it contains a general aviation company called TG Aviation and flying school which has been on site for many, many years. It is an emergency landing site for passenger widebodies from Heathrow and Gatwick and several other companies on the airfield depend on the runway to bring their business in and take it out again. The news that Ostend airport is closing now offers even more business for Manston. This rapid announcement by the owner is highly suspicious of asset stripping and turning the site into a huge housing estate which is the last thing we need in this area.
As people who are passionate about our aviation history and the need to keep facilities operational I would ask you, and anyone else who picks up this thread, to add their name to the following petition. https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/ ... on-airport Thankyou
