How much space is needed for a large model?

Feeling inspired by some of the large Warbirds flown at Weston Park a few weeks back I wondered if something like a 1/4 scale Spitfire would be viable at our club field.

I have not measured the size of the strip whicj with 3-4 ft high crop to 3 sides is not overly large but one of our planning conditions is that we maintain at least 200m separation between our nearest neighbour and any flying models so limited to say 300m radius from pilots location..

At the moment I fly 3D aerobatic models of upto 100cc and fly turnaround schedules to keep in close.

Can anyone that flys a large warbird please advise just how much space they need?

Simon, possably a warbird flyer local to yourself could visit and fly at your club field to give you an idear of the space needed, question is where are you and your club field ?

Put my sensible cap on and realised that our club strip is probably too small for easy take offs and landings, it is about 100ft x 40ft rectangle surrounded by wheat / barley

Will stick to my large aerobatic models.

Sensible call.......a 1/4 scale Warbird could be relatively light at 35-40lb & 80-100cc, or it could be almost double that with any of the crop of big 150-250cc radials now on the market. They are big, heavy & fast and can eat up a vast amount of space. Getting a Warbird of this size in & out of a 100ft strip reliably time after time would be tough (even one of the lighter ones)..........keeping it within 300m at all times equally hard. I'd stick to your 3D types or move clubs to somewhere more Warbird friendly.

Or consider one of the new generation of super light weight 1/5 (ish) warbirds that are currently on offer via Black Horse and YT International.

Twice as much fun as a heavy 1/4 scale war bird and they all fly really well. The only downside is that the O.E retracts fitted to them are often barely fit for purpose and the chances are due to the light weight nature of the structure, you will only really get one chance to crash them.
