Both SLEC and Balsa Cabin have posted notices today advising that they have lost their primary balsa suppliers. It seems that Chinese wind turbine blade production is buying the lot from under them. They expect prices to double or more in the near future.
If you're planning a winter project - get in quick
A long way from how we originally got Balsa, I remember reading in a book by Vic Smeed that it was used to build rafts to float bananas down the river and then sold cheaply as a by product.
It was used to line the inside of fuel tanks on aircraft in WW2 and to line liqued gas tankers. So I think our toys have always been way down the list of preferd users.
