Hi you all big boys!! I have been thiking the last couple days and thought mm interesting topic and see what comes.
as you all have big models and appearing to all those airshows around the country. do u use vans and tow caravans or just vans and sleep in the vans or a campervan with a big trailier etc and I would like to know what your each individual set up etc
as I run a Landrover Discovery and it is perfect size for my small models. but to stay for the weekend I would have to take my caravan etc and Im understand some don';t have electric points so generator is needed to charge batteries etc I am interested to see what comes on this topic.

my missus want me to scrap the beast (landrover) and get a vw campervan (mw thinks good idea!! get away for weekend flying) hehe

My wife's idea of going away for a weekend invloves hotels and I cant get one of those on my trailer

I tried persuading her with a very larger camper van but it still wasn't a hotel. So, myself and my son travel on our own and have a £500 caravan with an opening rear window for getting wings inside !!

this year will be the first time that i have done the shows with a van (and caravan). previously it have just been the car and caravan, with models spread between the car and caravan. the main problem i had was that to be able to use the caravan, we had to unload the models into the awning which meant the awning had to go up no mater what the weather. hopefully now, all the models and gear can stay in the van until needed and if the weather is rubbish the awning doesnt need to get wet.
from experience of what i have seen at many different shows, model regulars on the circuit do the same. big van stuffed with models, and acaravan to fall into

Largest Model I transport to the shows is my Sky-120, which my 7 seater Picasso is more than big enough, I also drag a 2 birth clubman caravan around with me as well, a good caravan battery will last you the weekend unless you like loads of gadgets, in which case you will need a generator.

oh yes meant to say i also have a small (900w) 2 st genny so i can chrage things. if we're just out in the caravan and dont need to charge anything, the 100Ah battery will easily last a long weekend.

We have a Fiat Van and tow a2 birth caravan so we can put all display planes in van and when at shows its easy to park up and then unload planes into tent etc, we have never used a generator a heavy duty batt will do the job.

It took me a while to conclude what many people had concluded much earlier, that a van with a caravan is the most practical solution.
I agree that a generator is usually unnecessary, a high capacity leisure battery will easily last a weekend - a two stroke generator is about as antisocial as a mobile phone at a funeral, especially if left to run for hour after hour. If you really need a generator (to run your wife's hairdryer!) consider investing in a well silenced four stroke type.
I'd also advise on at least two large water carriers, the supply is often quite a distance from where you are parked.

A good field charger and a car or leisure battery will do the job of keeping you top up over the weekend.

After more years than I can remember travelling to shows all over Europe I think a Motorhome towing a trailer is the best option. Nice iving quarters and models secure in custom made racks in a trailer is hard to beat to avoid transit damage. It keeps fuel and other smelly things out of the vehicle you travel in and being basically a box is is easy to fit out the trailer to cary a variety of models.
