Journal Articles

Postby Keith Mitchell » July 23rd, 2011, 9:17 am

It is, perhaps, a self-evident truth that many modellers produce beautiful aircraft but are somewhat recalcitrant when it comes to writing an article about them. Whether it's British modesty, a lack of confidence about one's writing ability or just bl--dy sloth I don't know ---- !!

I don't think 'Forums' have helped either as, although they have a splendid role in communicating one's work via the internet, they perhaps inhibit modellers' less-than-generally-enthusiastic desire to publish their own written word.

No more! Help is at hand! In addition to proof-reading articles submitted to the Journal I have, for many years, provided a confidential service to modellers who want to publish work, but feel less than confident about their own written English.

If this describes you, why not PM me or ring me up (01670 814671). You can send me your text, typed - or even hand-written if you can't type - and I'll help you draft it into something attractive. Photo's, by the way, are essential so get our Neil to do some for you or include your own.

Nobody will ever know this process has taken place and a nice piece of written work - in your name - will appear in our prestigious publication.

There is also an added inducement. Many articles in the Journal are requested by editors in the professional modelling press and thereby your work will generate a fee!!

Get to it!
K.

Hi Keith, whilst your post and offer is a good encouragment to generate articles, as an ex editor, I used to go to most of the major LMA shows/events, and when mixing with the members and chatting to them, used to cajole them into producing an article, or a general description of their model, so as they could be turned into articles, hence I always had a good supply of material.

As regards, the Forum, I think it is excellent, and certainly has it's place, especialy for non LMA like myself, who can converse with other members about our hobby and models, I know I keep praising Dave up for his web site  but it is a great source of information and enjoyment for people like myself, and as I keep banging on, Dave to his credit has mastered the black art of publishing the LMA Web site which is a joy to navigate.

Being a non member, (due to taking a different direction in the hobby) I do not get a journal to read, so for me I can enjoy reading about othere peoples models whilst not having to be a member. Yes it is a double edged sword and a catch 22 situation, but I personaly hope dave continues with producing his excellent web site for us non members, and I hope you get enough offers to keep you busy :D

Regards,

Vince.

Hi Vince, now there is the dilemma, I publish and run the website/Forum but I am also the editor of the Journal, I go to all the shows as I am on the Events Committee, my main problem is “time” or should I say the lack of it, I did ‘thanks to some extra help at Cosford this year’ manage to talk to a few members, only time will tell if I was successful on that front.

Journal articles verses forum build threads, I feel there is room for both, we do still have members that don’t use a computer or go on the internet, the Journal much to my surprise is still in great demand from our members.

Now that I have the privilege of putting this little magazine together for the LMA and although it is hard at time balancing the two I really enjoy doing it, the difference between a build thread and a Journal article is this, a build thread has a very short life span, as soon as the build is complete the thread gets lost in cyber space in a matter of weeks, but a Journal build article is in print which is often keep for years. There is arguments on both side which is better, it is up to you as a reader to decide which one you are, the interactive type or the sit back and enjoy type.

I would just like to say thanks to you all for your support in both the website and the Journal.

Dave Parry (LMA Website/Forum Administrator & LMA Journal Editor)

PS, I wish I had mastered the black art, but thank you for thinking that way.

Thanks for your reply Dave, yes I totally agree with you, there is a need for the journal, not everyone is a computer techno nut  and although I do not get to see your rendition of the journal, if the web site is anything to go by it will be excellent, and yes, it is bl***y hard work, and very time consuming, I certainly do not envy you in any way  Power to your elbow chap, and just don't ignor the wife and you'll keep the job

Arr, just got back from doing another good deed, this super hero stuff is hard work, and I can’t get use to putting my underpants on last instead of first. Anyway thank you all for you words of encouragement, joking aside it is appreciated; only four more days to do the websites front page and the Cosford report, no pressure then.
