What a superb video from Mark Hinton, recorded at Cosford and on the site front page. This has it all; great image quality, outstanding stability of the camera platform in flight, no exposure funnies as the camera "looks" ground to sky etc.

Please can we know more? What kind of aircraft (quadcopter?).
If video telemetry then what frequency? Some details of camera and lens, control of lens etc., air-to-ground or on-board recorded. . . . . .

This one makes Flycamone2 and even HERO look very basic! Please tell.

Whish I could help you Chris, but mark just gave me the video, sorry, hang on, I think I have a picture of it from Neil H I will have a look and post it here.

I know it's a DJI Phantom, and I believe Mark's using a Go Pro camera, probably a 3 black edition as the Phantom is designed to carry one. I bought the same thing last week and it's ace. What I would like to know is what gimbal Mark is using, because thats what makes the footage so smooth.

The Phantom is an amazing bit of kit, if you get stuck just release the sticks and it stops and hovers on it's own, it has GPS and knows it's height. If it looses signal for any reason, it will fly to where it took off and land itself. I tried it out. It works perfectly.

I put a bit of information on this website a few months ago about the British Army using this type of gear for surveillance, my only complaint is that the MOD paid £100.000 per unit for something that does virtually the same thing. I see that this toy will only cost a member of the public less than £300. It's only our taxpayers money !!!!! ps. excellent bit of coverage Mark.

Guys this is an interesting thread for me. I would still like to know more about telemetry - can the operator see what the Phantom is filming in real time for instance?

Yes, it can be done quite easily. With the Go Pro 3 Black you will need a cable from the USB to a 5.8ghz transmitter (which can be powered from the lipo on board the phantom), also a receiver on the ground and a screen/video goggles to watch it on. You can only watch is a low resolution, but the camera is recording all the time in HD.

I have just purchased the above bits and bobs to do this from firstpersonview.com. Ordered yesterday, delivered today!

What you see in the picture is nearer £1300

Mark showed us the video at Cosford, I couldn't believe how good it was, I did think it was probably more than £300 worth. Worth every penny, clever piece of kit. Have you used yours yet Matt?

That's the business, even sounds pretty real. I remember a guy in our club put a VHS camcorder in an Extra nearly 20 years ago, worked ok until he opened the throttle, then it all went a bit fuzzy. Your ones not affected by the engine at all. Look forward to seeing the air to air stuff.
