Falklands Vulcan

Postby Mike Booth » February 11th, 2014, 10:21 pm

As our chairman, Dave Johnson, has a unique and superb Vulcan Jet model.
I thought i'd relate the tale below, that I was reminded of recently.

Way back in May/June 1982, as the Falklands war raged in the South Atlantic, my ex wife and I were on holiday in Cornwall in a village called Mousehole near Landsend. Every evening I would watch the nightly news avidly to learn more on the progress of British Forces.

It was during these two weeks, that one afternoon, whilst we were out on a cliff walk, that I spotted two aircraft at altitude way off, coming over the horizon.
Conditions were perfect, clear blue sky and hot weather.
As the aircraft progressed it was clear to see they were leaving two contrails behind them.
As they got closer to the coast I watched fasinated as one aircraft of which i'd now identified as a Vulcan Bomber, was formating and breaking formation and then reformating with a second Vulcan Bomber.
Although I had no previous knowledge at the time and nothing had been announced on TV news, it occurred to me that they may of had something to do with the Falklands conflict.
I couldn't help but think that the pilot in the first aircraft, who left a perfect wavy pattern in the sky as he formated with the other aircraft, was celebrating his homecoming back to Blighty.

A couple of days later it was announced that there had been a successful bombing raid on Port Stanley Airfield. Over the years since i've become aware of the fact that there were serveral Vulcan Bombers involved in the operation, with only one making the successful run all the way to Port Stanley.

It would be lovely to think as this gets read by a wider audience, that any aircrew or other witnesses to this singular event may make themselves known to me, and confirm my unique experience, as they came home off the Atlantic.

I think you will find that the Black Buck missions were instigated from Ascension, and not from Britain. There was more than one mission, so the Vulcans would have stayed in the South Atlantic. If you read Vulcan 607 by Rowland White, (an incredible book) you will find out the whole amazing story.

Bobs right Mike, ive read Vulcan 607, and passed it on to a mate, hell of a story, and so nearly it failed, the mighty Woodford/Chadderton creation did us proud, not forgetting of coarse, the Victor and Vulcan tankers, and the lads at chadd a, woody, who worked 24 hour shifts to get the conversions done, so we could sock it to the argies, most of the lads have been shoved onto the scrap pile now, along with the planes, could we do it again? no, but then, we wont have to do, will we?????????????

by the way, it took a mix of 12 vics and vulcs to get just one plane over the target, hell of a plan, proves we brits will never give in to the bad guys,

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I'm aware of all of that.
However they were based in the UK, so the aircraft I witnessed were almost certainly returning from Ascension.
Time will bare me out.
I'm hoping aircrew will eventually see this.

You should have been at the woodford perimiter fence, like i was, watching the activity 24/7, under floodlight, in all weathers, got told off by security, but was deemed harmless, aircraft where flown in by civvy pilots for a quick refurb, some where already museum pieces, great times, now, i fly there, love the history of the field,
