Aircraft plans

Evening all,

If I wanted to find plans of aircraft from manufacturers that no longer exist e.g. Saunders-Roe is there somewhere that I could find them whether on the internet or not? Is there an archive for this sort of thing? There are books that contain diagrams but when considering building something I presume builders look at the full size plans and then work out a model design from that? Or is there a certain amount of artistic licensing involved?

Cheers in advance,

James

Thanks Alan, nice find :) . However, you are correct at there being no SARO section. Theres a few topics on the RC forums but nothing on paper yet. I shall keep searching. If i remember rightly there is a group down in Solent that specialise in SARO history. I'll see if I can hunt down some contact details and take it from there.

Thanks Alan, I'll take a look when im at a real pc. What kind of resources search do they have? I'll have a look at their website during work tomorrow morning. Very tempting Andy thanks but im actually trying to research the SR.45 Princess. I have a nearly complete 3d model from a couple of years back which was for a simulator and I think its a wonderful aircraft. Maybe not at the moment but at somepoint I would love to build a large model Princess when I have the resources. For now collecting information and research to me is just as exciting.

No idea what they have, this snippet was one of the things i find, and store, so much easier and less bulky than trawling through books :D

The production drawings of the biggest ever metal flying boat won't be much use when making a model out of wood; the external outline will be the same, but the insides completely different.

If they still exist they would be quite interesting to look at though!

Saying that, having spent may happy hours looking at aircraft production drawings, they're nothing like what a modeller would class as 'plans'.

That does actually lead quite nicely into my next question Rob :D of if you have the general exterior dimensions and scale of the craft is there equations to tell you how many formers it needs within the design? How many stringers should be used or even the maximum stress that can be applied between bulkheads? I'm aware of model aerofoil design, full size aerofoil sections and how they should be used for best performance. The drawings would definately let me produce a better model for FSX and satisfy my curiosity as this must have been a fantastic aircraft to see in the flesh but as for producing a large model that is another story

This link is really good, but the doc is a PDF and I don't know how to pull the drawings off.
Cutaway sections etc. and a load of info (even tells you how much washout was built into the wings!)

It would seem plans for rc have been done! See "Ruddermans" post.

Hi Steve, I already have those apart from the attachment so good find thanks. Maybe I can use most of them to get an idea of the curves on this monster now. I'll take a closer look at RCgroups today. Full cutaway sounds good :D
