There was a documentary, ages back, that had a piece on the ATA.They were very skilled and brave, having only very limited training and a small handbook on how to fly that particular aircraft. There a tales of them delivering aircraft into an airfield when the regular pilots thought the cloud conditions were too bad.

There was indeed, in one case a female ATA pilot landed in thick fog at RAF Little Rissington that was home to No. 6 Flying Training School. Upon discovering that she had zero blind flying training the offered her the use of their blind flying simulator, which she proceeded to fall out of several times !
