Hi all

i was wondering if anyone has got a engineers milling machine that i would be able use and have access too

I have brought Some quick change tool posts for my myford 7 and they do not centre correctly i need to mod them so they drop below the cross side, i need to notch so the can drop below the cross slide?

i have 8 to cut a recess in

What a hard way of doing a simple mod, mill the cast iron toolpost platform away on the compound slide, done this on 21 myfords at work over the years, doesn’t need much, the existing toolposts, and the centre height adjustment are plenty tough enough for some bloke in a shed, I do this for a living, our machines have been hammered over the years, all witht hese toolposts, no probs

The cross slide, by the way, is not the one on the top, it’s the one that winds across the face of the job, the compound slide can also be referred to as the top slide, it’s the one that can be swivelled through 360 degrees, for turning angles etc, God, talking lathes on a weekend, Yuk! Ive got a myford super 7 in the garage, not gone round for 15 yrs, wonder if it ever will?

can u supply a photo of what you mean not sure what you trying to get at?

are you saying to mill/grind the top slide back to inline with the tool block ?

for me its easy to mill the tool holders as i have 8 chances, with milling the top slip its a one shot deal?

but i do like that option instead of 8 runs a single run?

If it's just a bit needs nibbling off the bottom of the toolholder, hack a bit off with an angle grinder, be done in 5 minutes.

i like the idea, but if a jobs worth doing do it properly not bodger it

'Properly' is the enemy of 'doing it at all'

It could be done 'properly' with a hacksaw & a file, would take a bit longer though, but be good exercise.

Milling the toolpost seat is relatively easy, it’s clearance, there’s nothing precise about it, cutting cast iron with a hacksaw is not easy, it needs a milling machine, if you want to do the toolposts, it’s up to you, by the time you get to the last one, you should know what your doing, but it’s 8 cuts, as opposed to one,

Richard, Alan is a skilled turner with many yours of experience, I too am a qualified turner with many years working on the shop floor on Myfords, colchester, herbert, centre turret and capsten lathes. I suggest you listen to the experts and you might learn something. When I worked on lathes it was not uncommon to need to use a tool that was over centre. We would grind the bottom off the tool, It was not unusual to find tools with 1/4" cut off the bottom along the shank. Another quick dodge was to put the tool in upside down and run the machine backwards.

i have taken the top slide off to check for parts that may interfere, by looks like this is the easiest way

just now need it milled back flush with tool holder for clearance, can anyone help with this?

also found the original locking handle will not clear the tool holder now they are full set up so i will at some point make a taller locking handle. i have just drawn a design, for now i will get a 7/16th bsf nut and washers ordered, and also order 7/16th tap and die? for later use,

paul i will try the reverse tool tip, as i am parting off 4mm brass rod but i am using index tools and bits for others

any you chaps close to Newark ?

Neither of us are, I suggest you take it to a local engineers, and ask if they can help you, does Newark museum not have a basic machine shop?

worked a treat, milled the top slide back 12mm, using a beautiful old Bridgeport mill something from the ww2 eara

Strange isn’t it? I did ours on a Bridgeport, glad you got sorted, I wonder how members get by without machine tools, who lent you the miller?

company gave me access to the mill was ELMEC just down the road cost me 4 cans of beer

they also have a old Colchester lathe in there as well for the 50's
