Place the nipple 20 to 25mm from the cylinder exhaust flange and drill a .5mm hole, this will give you good smoke, with smoke fluid or diesel slightly thinned with paraffin. If you need more smoke or your pump is not very powerful go to .75mm hole. smoke works best from half to full throttle only, and don't forget the one way valve to stop the tank being emptied via the vent. The tank should be set up the same as the petrol tank = clunk, feed, fill and vent with fill plugged when flying. # I make my preferred system with a1.5 mm hole in the exhaust nipple flattened out to spread the fluid spray and then control the fluid flow with a 'slug' in the fuel line drilled with the .5mm hole. back from this is the one way valve, then a screen washer pump, then the micro switch operated from the arm of a servo. Simple but fool proof. Run the pump on 6 to 7.2 volts. HM government warning Smoking is Hazardous to Health.

You cannot put a smoke nipple that close to the flange on a canister set up, it will suck fluid into the engine, foul the plug and reduce power. On the Zimmermann set up you have its designed to have the smoke nipple in the canister inlet tube, just in front of the canister body. Either way you cannot tap the 0.5mm thick stainless tube, it will need a bulkhead fitting or as designed brazed in tube.

Good point, when using a tuned canister the back pressure is probably greater. I tend to make my own silencers and I link the smoke switch to the throttle position so it only operates from half throttle upwards. I have not experienced any problems as you describe, probably due to my crummy silencer design. I always silver solder a m4 nut on the exhaust pipe and use a piece of threaded rod with a locknut to be able to drill the entry hole in.

I was simply quoting the excellent advice given to you by Dave Wilshire above. I suggest you read that carefully.
