1/4 scale tempest ii with weslake 274( you tube video)

Postby Karl mander » March 30th, 2012, 5:47 pm

Hello
I acquired a weslake 274cc engine last year and decided to make a 1/4 scale tempest ii to fit it in . I chose this aeroplane as the cowl was large enough for the engine to fit in.
The airframe was duly built and then the job of engineering on the weslake began. Exhausts were fabricated from ally tube at a local engineers.
The engine appeared to have never been run and the first problem was getting it spinning over quick enough for the magneto ignition to work. I therefore fitted decompression valves to both cylinders. Helped with a miller persuader starter I could turn the engine over quick enough but couldn't choke the engine as the fuel ran out the of the carburettor due it being a tail dragger . An angled carb manifold was then made and hey presto it fired up.
Due to the first propellor splitting due to the hole for the prop shaft and securing bolt holes a new propellor boss was manufactured.
Finally after all the engine started and ran a treat, I have recorded a short 20 second video of this initial run and placed it on you tube. If you search on you tube using the keywords- 1/4 scale tempest ii with weslake 274, you should find it easy enough.
Hope you like it and it should hopefully be airborne later this year.
The span is 123" and all up weight 32 kgs .
Karl.

Blimey mate that sounds ace!!! How much work to fit the decompressors, were the tappings already in the heads?

Heres a link to the video

There were two blanks in the cylinder head were decompressors intended to go. I took these out them machined two 14mm bolts to take two chainsaw decompressor valves. Unfortunately the compression alone was closing the valves so I had to take the valves apart and re-engineer them to make them work.
I also had to fit a choke to the carb , I acquired a couple of ski doo carbs from the states, I then used the choke mechanism. I was also able to make the angled manifold by sawing of the ends of the two carbs and getting them welded together. Unfortunately the cast ally basically melted so I used metal epoxy with fantastic results.
I agree it sounds incredible, although with a 34" propellor spinning around it scrares me to death, thus the reason I'm stood so far away!

As well as the weslake running I've fired up my inline zenoah 62 twin today,(2 zenoah 62s connected to make a inline twin with a mick reeves reduction drive) amazingly it works! I've got another video of it which I'll put on you tube, unfortunately this doesn't sound nearly as good as the weslake. It's fitted into my 1/3 scale me109 which originally had a single z62 with reduction drive.
