Electric McLaren F1 40% Extra

Postby Dominic Mitchell » April 30th, 2012, 11:34 am

Anyone else interested in large electric projects...?

Image

This airframe has changed owners a couple of times before it got to me but I was told by the original owner that the model was originally commissioned by the F1 Team themselves. It was sold to me as airframe only. Composite fuselage with foam core veneered wings. Motor I am installing is an Plettenberg Predator 37. Generates up to 16KW of power but even that is excessive for a 40lb 40% airframe like this. Matched up with a Schulze 400A ESC and 14S12000 mah flight pack. Last season the motor proped at 29x10 pulled 280A. The motor is by far the lightest in its class

Some pics of some of the assembly. Not much more to do before I fly it for the first time in 1-2 weeks...

After carving out the front of the cowl installed the Predator motor on the 100mm stand offs and the Schulze 400A ESC underneath.

12ch Spektrum Powerbox installed, rudder and elevators setup. Just waiting for some steel aileron horns and a couple more servos.

Nice 6 inch spinner with 29x10 prop.

very nice. some serious power installed there. It sure won't be silent flight when you open the throttle.
LMA2345 now that should be easy to remember!

I don't mind the prop noise actually. I could use quieter props but it even though its electric I don't see WHY it should be quiet.

Here's a vid of me flying my Extra from last year with the same power system. Organiser's mocked me a little by giving me the 'pindrop' award for the event.
