100cc Turbo Raven build

Postby Joshua Henderson » July 10th, 2012, 8:58 pm

Hi Guys,
I'm starting a thread up for a new kit built turbo raven. The model is the very first prototype from Richard at Falcon Aviation. The wingspan is 97 inch, and it is designed for a 70cc engine up( I'll be using a RCGF 110cc). Richard has made all of the molds for the cowl, canopy and also i think the undercarriage. I will be building the very first prototype and checking everything out on it and also flying it at the shows . I have spent almost a full day with him, Diane and bob the dog today. We have gone through all of the plans today, altered a couple of little things (more for my preference) and also started cutting it out. I must say that the quality of the plans that he's drawn and the quality of the laser cutting is very good and better than other known kit cutters i've used occasionally in the past, before properly knowing Falcon aviation who is actually very local to me.
Whilst waiting for the laser cutter to finish cutting the fuselage pieces (sub formers etc) we dry assembled it and it was together in 15-20 minutes( with only one elastic band to hold the tapered nose together) I've left the stuff with Richard, as there is a couple of little things to finish cutting, before it can be properly built
The plane is being built with split ailerons so flaps can be set up properly, but they'll be mixed to work with the ailerons aswell, also there is also the normal twin elevators and one rudder servo on a pull, pull setup. I'm also using a smoke system.
I can't wait to start the proper build of the model and i think it will be very popular as it is totally different to any other models (edge, extra and yak) but they also fly aswell.

If theres any questions throughout the build when i start next week then please ask, but can i please say, can we keep the thread on track although i dont mind a little bit of banter. I also suggest you take a look at Richards new website which is http://www.falcon-aviation.co.uk/ although from what he is saying the website isn't fully finished and being updated almost daily.
I'd also like the opportunity to say I dont work for Richard, nor am i sponsored by him, but i am helping him out by building a few of his prtotypes and fully testing them for him.
Also after I have built mine Richard is talking about building one for himself which will be set up for electric

Thats it for now and the build should start next week.
Thanks
Josh

Hi Guys
Here are three pics i have to hand. everything is dry assembled with only a couple of blobs of glue to hold it whilst i check all the "squarness" of everything. Getting to this point honestly took one and a half hours including getting my tea, and walking the dog.
i will be using slightly thinned aliphatic glue for most joints and also a little bit of gorilla glue if its needed.

As said earlier, the ailerons will be split so i can set flaps aswell as mix them for ailerons.
The fuselage is basically a box with formers internally, but then the shape will be made from sub formers on the outside with stringers and balsa sheeting.
Theres a few details i need to check up on tomorrow, mainly around the bulkhead/ engine box area, as i have forgotten how Richard said it goes together and obviously at this time theres no destruction's to work from as it's the very first kit.

The wing is very easy to build.
There are tabs on all the ribs which can be snapped off. everything interlocks together. There is a false leading edge and then there will be a solid leading edge added.
The whole wing will be sheeted in 1/8" balsa so it can be sanded as will the fuselage.

Thats it for now. I do have quite a few detailed pictures that i will be adding tomorrow but her is the basics.

I hope the pictures load ok.
if theres any questions just fire away

josh
