Picked this plane up at gaydon from Mr DJ, the poor thing looked so neglected I had to take pity on it and had to give it a good home,
first order of things is to suit and boot it, I'm not sure what it is, but if the brace at the top of the front was removed it would look something like a cub, if anyone has any thoughts on it I would be gratefull, the name on it was goliath.
Still a bit of cleaning up to do, all in one piece and looking good.
was thinking in the region of a 26 to 38cc engine, leaning more toward the 38cc, I would rather have to much power than not enough.

It is a Goliath.
Originally designed as a free flight model back in the 1950's (I think by D A Russel). The original was 10' span and designed to fly with a spark ignition motor.
With the advent of radio control it was quite a popular model for radio conversion, single channel back in those days, as being quite large it could carry the weight of the big batteries the old radio gear required.

Jack--many who looked over it at Gaydon also said it was originally a free flight plan---I think a nice petrol motor in it would be good,if the weather is as bad as forecast over the weekend,you should have it finished and we can have a play with it when we meet up north in next week or two ???
ps I have a nice Zenoah 23 in a box if any good for you

Tis indeed a Goilath, nice to see a deceased members models coming back to life, would you believe, i saw a nylon covered one, many many years ago, 3 channel radio, powered by a merco 61 swinging a 15inch wood prop!!! and it flew it, and throttled well, woodya belive it!!

another one in the club had a Taplin Twin, i stood in awe in those days

Thank you all for your usefull info, don't want to rush it,once covered, would like to do a nice paint job on it, or as good as I can get it, ( I'm no Rembrant), so a great deal of thought is going into this, as for engine dave, there was a sc91 in it, so I would say a 30cc min. would be just right, but thanks for the offer anyway.
Still have wings to uncover and check over and cover, a few other bit and bobs to look out for, plus I think the canopy could do with being changed, that's all for now.
Dave, see you when you come up, I don't think plane will be finished by then but will give it a bash.

Agreed Alan... a Merco 61 had about the same power as a modern .40, the SC91 was over the top! How about an Evo 10cc?

Have'nt got round to the struts yet alan, but me thinks some mods will be needed, not a problem, will work something out.

Did some more cleaning on fuz and wings, also some repair to some spars that were cracked, and fitted tartan 26cc, just a dry fit though, so tank and other parts can be positioned and installed.

After a fair amount of cleaning up and rubbing down it was time to do a bit of covering, only the surfaces for the moment, next cleanup job will be the wings, couple of small mods to be done with regard to quick release strut fixings then covering.

I think that motor will be a Taratn 22cc wont it? there was the 22, and the 44 twin, still be enough for this old girl,

you could be right alan, just checking to see if there is still a tartan web site, but as you say plenty for this old girl, not for long, soon to be a well dressed old girl with new shoes on.
