Here are the results of a christmas in the workshop. My 1/2 scale Tiger Moth is now taking shape.

Large.! The standard of building could not be bettered , I noticed this on the Orlik at Gaydon.

Run out of German planes to build John?. Brill. can't wait to see it fly.Will it be ready for Gravelines in June?.

Not finally decided on the colour scheme yet as I keep finding pictures of fantastic paint jobs. I suppose this is the problem with modelling such a popular aircraft. Covering is Diatex 1000 doped on with scale rib stiching and pinking tapes. Paint will also be dope to keep the integrety of the finish.
It is being built as a glider tug to tow the new selection of 1/2 scale vintage gliders that are being built around the UK. The motor is a custom made inline twin 2 stroke of 384cc. Its a long stroke motor to swing a scale size prop.
Still plenty of German models to build but I fancied a change from WW2 and the standard form of construction I use to build them.

With regard to summer !!!? Well we can only hope we get one in 2009.

What's this Graveline reference, I take it there is a large model fly-in or show there?

I live (in England) but only about 30 miles as the crow flies from Graveline!
My club Bloobirds Radio Flyer's are mindful that it's the centenary of Louis Bleriot's flight when he landed in 1909 only half a mile from our current flying field!
In the 70's a contingent from Graveline Club flew a 1/4 scale Bleriot Monoplane from Calais to Dover and they also landed within a half mile of the original Bleriot landing site.
This was before we secured our current flying field but at the time the SMAE (what's this BMFA?) contacted Bloobirds about the Graveline club attempt and a contingent of Bloobirds headed by our Sam Lawrence, who died some years ago, met them at the landing site.
Our (now small) club are currently considering whether or not to commemorate Bleriot's flight by holding a fly-in or similar.

ROB---if your club goes ahaed with celebrations ref the Bleriout,i have a 60% bleriout i fly and would be interested in supporting an event there,providing it doesnt clash with prevous arrangements---DAVE

This is getting a bit off topic but the Gravelines club do hold a show on the last weekend of June each year. It does clash with the LMA event at Duxford this year due to the Duxford date moving.
With regard to the 100th anniversary of the Bleroit flight, I am not aware of the Gravelines club doing anything special but the Beguin club in France have been working for 2 years to build a 1/2 size replica Bleriot and fly it across the channel on the anniversary. I have been assisting with this project for sometime and it is on track to make the flight. As is usual in these times, building the model is the easy part, its the paperwork that is the difficult bit to get all the necessary permissions and approvals.

sorry to keep you off topic John, but that sounds like a brilliant project. This is the sort of thing everyone, modellers or not, are interested in. Do I remember a large Hurricane or Spit flying the channel many years ago? I seem to remember the model actually in the museum at Goosedale..

Bob: Greg Hayfield was the pilot for yet another project by Thanet MFC but they did not take the short route but flew North up the channel from Calais to Thanet.

I think this project is just asking for the pilot to have a waving arm?

On second thoughts with a 3foot tall pilot you will probably need the help of a prosthetics professional!

I already have the pilot for the Tiger Moth. He is from a German company called Axel

Each pilot is hand made and each is slightly different to any other. They are not cheap and there is quite a waiting list for them but for a large model they finish off the cockpit very well.

Bottom wings are now made and just need the internal bracing installed before covering.

I am now into all the metalwork, you don't realise just how many metal brackets and fixings there is on a Tiger Moth !! Cabane assembly is almost finished and ready to install on the fuz. It has all been made of rolled oval section tube as per full size. More pics soon.

Looks brilliant, I can't wait to see this with a glider in tow. Hopefully flying later this year?
It will be worth the trip from Cornwall to wherever just to see it airborne.
