1/3 scale SE5A

Postby david clarke » June 7th, 2012, 5:01 am

Hello all,My next project to sit alongside the Dr1 is the SE5A .I managed to get a few hours in the workshop yesterday, finshed drawing the tailplane and decided to build it.It spans 42" 13" chord,it took 2.1/2 hous to build just need to put the hard points in for rigging wires, quite pleased with the weight as well 4.4 oz.It's going to take a little longer than the Dr1 as other commitments are keeping me out of the shed,so post's be slow coming.Cheers,Dave.

Hello all, been very busy in the workshop the results can be seen below.I'm not going to sit for hours explaning every detail of the build just a few pictures during the build, the results can be seen below.I am thinking of offering plan packs not full kits,so one can purchase materials as they progress.Anyway heres a few pictures of the build it took just shy of 6 weeks to build a little more complicated than the Dr1 due to the rigging, but still very simple construction.

The model flies superb been waiting for 2 weeks for the wind to drop, yesterday 22nd was the day.The video is the second flight out of 6 first flight was totally uneventfull only trim needed was quite a lot of down trim, the taiplane is set at 0% so +1% should cure that. The wight of the model is 35lb the Zenoah 62 was more than enough power,645 mg's all round 2 on elevator which proved to be ample.Below are a few more pictures and a video, next project i have a soft spot for the Stuka as as you can see in my other thread so thinking of a 1/4 scale Stuka, and only one wing to build!.

Hello Alan,Still got the Dr1 decided to keep it fly it over the winter and sell it in the spring, but should i get reasonable offer it would have to go.Now the Se5's flown i will start with the Dr1 again, got a few revisions to make to the plan, shape of the tail needs looking at and the lenght of the nose.

Cheers,Dave.

I only asked where the rocker covers came from...no mention of kits from me. Where they scratch made ?

Your right Stewart there never was a kit,I said I might do plan packs but to be honest just not had time,I am still tweeking the design, thinking of making a two piece fus to incorporate scale pull pull wires to the elevator,I have tried several ways of doing them with the removable tail but none of them were satisfactory.
Peter, the rocker covers are scratch built from balsa, the mk2 has a complete dummy engine and working radiator grills.
Cheers,Dave.

How was engine cooling? From the pictures I can’t see many outlet holes for the hot air. Did you install baffles? An overheating engine is the only thing worrying me on my DB Giant Mannock build
