Re: Wellington build thread

This is another time consuming job but the result is quite pleasing I chose to make the stringers from 1/8th balsa so they would stand some contouring and avoid any starved horse effect between the formers.

At the start of this thread I mentioned that it was a good ten years since I scratch built anything. Building the Wellington has the effect of my ageing in dog years. At this rate my hind legs may well give up altogether before it's finished...

Planking completed.
Top tip for this is to get lots of pins and put at least one complete side in position before fixing any of them as they seem to need endless adjustment.
The result though is quite pleasing.

The contouring of the stringers may not be perfect but it's a true reflection of the full size as pointed out by my trusty fellow club members.
At last it's now ready for covering.

Finally I have completed the capping strips on the wings. The sheet material represents the full size to some extent. As a bonus the 1/16 sheet doubler over the top of the flaps works well to strengthen the top of the wing which was otherwise a bit weakened by fitting split flaps.

The effect is quite pleasing although time consuming.
Sorry Pete but doing the underside is a step too far for my patience...

Looking good Steve, the sheeting looks to shine a bit, have you glassed it or sanding sealed it or something ?

All bare wood Paul. Must be the light. There is some lightweight filler on the nacelle planking.
Covering arrived today so can get on with that soon.
Doing it in solartex as it's effectively an open frame and I want to get on with finishing it.

Aw come on Steve it's raining just the weather for doing the underside.

Looks great doesn't half take some Solartex though

Cheers

Pete

Hi Steve.

Could you take a close up of the wing capping, please. These old eyes can't quite make out how it's done.

Cheers,
Dave.

OK Dave

The sheet area for the walkway and over the flaps is just 1/16 balsa played over the existing. Create a 1/16 step 25mm in from the leading edge for a finish point at the front.
The strips are 1/16 sheet cut into strips 7mm wide spaced at 50 mm. The first strips go on guide quickly. I made up some 1/8 sheet spacers 43mm wide to set them out. Creating the squares is the more difficult bit needing lots of cut strip at 43mm.
After completing one wing take care on the second to get it the same. You will see the adjustment needed on mine.
To be more true to the full site the strips which are supposed to represent the frame all meet together on the leading and trailing edges making the short strips all different lengths. That would take considerably longer. Depends how long you want to spend getting into scale detail. It's a scale twin so losing an engine at a crucial time will quickly return it to kit form...
I still have to do the fin and tail so plenty to do yet.
Hopefully this helps.

Good morning Steve the Wellington is looking good just noticed the nacelle on the wing and wondered why it is short as I am working on a wellington at the moment and all of the 3-veiw's of different marks show the nacelles going back to the start of the flap?

regards Simon

Hi Simon.
Thanks for the feedback.
Interesting point about the nacelles. Looking at some pictures from the internet appear to back up what you are saying. All I can say is it's built as per the plan so that's one for Tony Nijhuis. From memory all the ones I have seen on our circuit are the same. My build thread is not intended for the scale connoisseur by any means. More for someone who wants to see how I got over the general enormity of the project.
Steve.

My version has the waist gunners positions so I set about cutting holes in the sides.
Scale detail about right but I did find myself cutting the top and bottom to the nearest stringer...
Whole thing needs to be covered now.

This post is all about problems as well as solutions so here was one.
I decided to put a standard sized servo on it's side into each tail half and had a suitable sized box section with plenty of room.

Tail servo box 1.jpg

However the carbon fibre joining tube went straight through the middle of it...

So much for planning! What this did was push the servo forward towards the thinner area making it protrude on the underside. After looking at different servo options until I went daft I settled on a pair of Savox servos. These are basically a low profile servo with metal gears and 9Kg of torque. Although strictly speaking they are fitted in the wrong aspect they fit snugly in the gap between the main spars and the tube and won't be going anywhere. Vibration should be at a minimal at this distance from the engines (for the photo I had to borrow a wooden spoon to represent the tube). Should work out nicely.
The fin isn't so slim so a standard size servo goes in there without difficulty.

Hi Steve,
A bit off the subject but where did you get your modelling pins from? they look to be exactly what I'm looking for.
Great build BTW been watching since day one.

Hi Dave.
Have had the pins for a while now. Believe they were from SLEC.
Give them a call 01953 885279.
