Re: 1/4 scale Sea Fury

Postby David Jones » March 18th, 2015, 7:05 pm

It’s been a little over a month since my last update, that’s because I’ve made hardly any progress on the build. I’ve been waiting for some gear to arrive from the States, which I received a couple of weeks back, and since then I’ve been away for a few days for my birthday bash. Not all has been lost though, I’ve used the “down time” to finish off my Apache DH1 Chipmunk. Enough of the excuses, I’m back on the Sea Fury again and here’s where I’ve got to in the last few days.

Before getting too engrossed with the front end, I wanted to sort out the rear of the fuselage and, now that I’ve got the retractable tail wheel unit, I can crack on.

A 1/4” ply former, extra to the plan, was made up to carry the tail wheel assembly. This was fitted, leaning backwards at the top by 2 degrees, in order to line up with the ply tongue that will fix to it when the tail plane is fitted.

The tail plane has 2 degrees positive incidence, so I needed to ensure that the ply former was fitted at the correct angle. Propping the fuselage up on the bench, with the datum at 0 degrees, I dry fitted everything to check the angles. I don’t know if it was more luck than judgement, but I simply sat the tail plane on the fuselage, clamped the tongue to the former and hey presto! It showed up at a dead two degrees on the incidence meter. I glued it in quick while I was ahead.

I then fitted the tail wheel to makes sure everything fitted as it should.

Now that the extra former was in place, I took the opportunity to cater for the servo leads and air lines. These were run along 1/4” square Cyparis rails along either side of the fuselage.

The bottom formers were then added, kept in place by the bottom stringer. I then made provision for the closed loop system for the steerable tail wheel. The trace wires go slack as the wheel retracts. I was now in a position to add the remaining stringers, but I thought it might be easier to permanently fit the tail wheel now, while it was easily accessible, so that’s what I’ve done. The assembly was bolted to the former using 3mm bolts into captive “T” nuts with a dab of Loctite. The airlines were then securely fitted and the closed loop wires attached to the tiller arm.

I then started to fit the stringers and found that a lot of adjustment was required which took quite some time. As I’ve found in the past with these plan builds, you can have a lot of discrepancies with the positioning of the notches for the stringers. This was the case here, along with the fact that a couple of the formers were the wrong profile, Former 6A being the main culprit. One of the 1/ 4”square stringers was scrapped and replaced with two 1/8” x 1/4” stringers along both sides. I’ve finally got it to a stage where I think it should be ready for sheeting, but I’ll have to keep double checking as I go along when the time comes.

I decided to switch from the fuselage back to the centre section today. Now that I’ve got the main wheels, I wanted to fit the main undercarriage legs. These were lined up and fixed with M4 bolts into captive “T” nuts. I’ve fitted them slightly different to that shown on the plan as I didn’t want a lot of the mechanism sticking out from the root. The axle centres are slightly forward and inboard, but I’m quite confident they will be okay. The wheels are half an inch smaller than shown on the plan anyway.

With that task out of the way I could now sheet the top of the centre section, something I’ve been wanting to do for over a month. The ribs were levelled off and extra spars were added to give further support for the 1/8” balsa sheets.

A skin was then made up from six sheets of 4” wide balsa. This was glued in place, weighed down and I’ve left it to set over night.

I am Following this build with interest Dave as I now have most bits to start mine, I have just made a couple of sets of retracts to suit as per the plan (one set for a customer who supplied the leg & wheel), I just have the legs to make for my own set.

Hi Dave, they certainly look the part.

I’ve now added the leading edge sheeting and sanded the whole structure to shape.

Skins were made up for the outer panels and they were sheeted as well. Once all the glue had dried, the entire wing was sanded to shape and fitted together.

It’s been a while since my last update, I’ve not been able to spend as much time on the build as I wanted to, this, coupled with the fact that what I have done has been most time consuming has meant there doesn’t seem to be much progress.

Now that the top surface of the entire wing is sheeted, a method of retaining the outer panels to the centre section had to be devised. The method I’ve used consists of a 1/4” ply tongue protruding from the root rib of the outer panel. As the panel is offered up to the centre section, the tongue slides into a fabricated ply sleeve which is glued onto the undercarriage bearer. The whole assembly is then locked together by an M6 nylon wing bolt retained by an M6 captive T nut. Once the bottom sheeting is fitted, the head of the bolt will be flush with the underside of the wing.

My attention then turned to fitting bays for the aileron and flap servos. Ply plates were glued in to carry the servo mounting brackets, and provision was made for attaching the servo hatches, six in total.

Full depth, hard balsa blocks were then fitted for the aileron Robart hinges, and provision made for the flat hinges for the flaps.

Finally the servo extension wires were labelled up and fed into the structure, along with the wires for the wing tip navigation lights, all of which were then secured in place. As I said previously, this has been most time consuming and, at the end of the day, is never seen, but it’s important that it’s done right. Now that these jobs are out of the way, I can start to think about sheeting the underside.
