T 28 Trojan

Postby Phil Cross » January 31st, 2015, 4:39 pm

Not my project but as Mr Dowbekin does not really get on with computers he has tasked me with putting this on the website.
About 3 years ago Harold decided to build a large T 28 Trojan. He initially purchased a 1400mm FMS T28 and was impressed with its flying characteristics so he had a plan enlarged somewhat and embarked on yet another epic build to a scale of 1 to 3.6 giving a wingapan of around 3.6 metres or 12 foot in old money. He initially decided to power the plane with a flat four 160cc 3w engine but part way through he was smitten with the Evolution 260cc beast of a radial engine, so thats what he obtained and I agree it looks a lot better. As his pit bitches I and Steve Stuttard have been helping him along with various aspects of the build. The airframe is more or less complete with a few more pieces of glass skin to be fitted and radio/fuel systems to be installed. The undercarriage is custom engineered electric retracts designed and built by Harold and are more than strong enough to support the plane. Initial weight should be around 30kgs without fuel so with the massive wing area it should hopefully be a pussycat to fly. Shouldnt be too long before its in primer and ready for test flying. Should look and sound fantastic alongside Corsairs and Sea Fury's at the shows.

Absolutely stunning! Lovely looking aircraft and the engineering of those retracts is certainly top notch!

There are lots of T 28s in Navy training schemes and Vietnam camo so as a tribute to Bob Hoover, probably the greatest pilot ever, Harold is going for this scheme. Bob can no longer fly in the USA because of his advancing years and the miserable ba****ds have revoked his licence.

Just a quick update on the progress. The model has now been painted in a satin finish 2 pack acrylic white, by Neil Hyde, thank you Neil. All systems apart from Nav lights are installed and functioning as they should and with batteries the dry weight is 31 kgs. The engine is in and the fuel system plumbed, we had a test run of the engine today in the airframe and on half throttle I struggled to hold it back, so power seems adequate as Rolls Royce say. Mainly a bit of wire tidying to sort out and the Cof G to finalise but as is, its not far off and with the batteries in the correct place no further wieght should be needed. Harolds done a fantastic job framing the cockpit with aluminium which was more than a little tricky given the curves on the cockpit. All in all it should be on the circuit fairly soon. Well done H.

We took the Trojan to Woodford today and despite the weather gods not being on our side managed to get a couple of flights in. Slight problem on the second flight as the gearbox on the screwjack retract mechanism for the nose leg fell apart. Not something that Harold made so we cant blame him for that. Dave Johnson did a superb job and a four point landing was made, two main wheels and the tips of the three bladed prop, Damn. Still it could have been a lot worse, other than that no issues and Dave reports that it flies very well and it sounds fantastic. Couple of links to the You Tube footage taken on the iphone sorry about the wind noise, Harold had a curry last night. Big thank you to all who came and supported Harold today and well done Harold !

A change of plan as to the colour scheme as the Bob Hoover scheme was not really recogniseable as a Trojan. A bit of a rush to get it ready for Gaydon and its not all done yet but its looking good. I will post some more pics for him from Gaydon this weekend.

Just got back from Gaydon having seen some amazing models on display. The trojan was fully assembled for the first time in its new livery and looked fantastic. As promised a couple of photos from the display.
