So at last after a very busy summer working on the house and garden i eventually got back in the workshop. After the success of my first Dr1 this is the revised version,i have made a lot of changes to the outline of the model whilst trying not to loose any of the flying qualaties of the original. The revisions are the fusalage side view i have shortend the nose and added scale farings to the fus sides and top,the tail is a exact scale as well.Construction is pretty standard with lightply doublers up front and builtup side frames.Sideframes are 3/8 x 3/4 balsa with 2mm lightply doublers, heres a few pics of progress so far.
Cheers,Dave

Sorry to disappoint Alan much too windy on tuesday

,Not been able to get in the workshop much this week but a little progress has been made.Tail feathers are built standard construction and a good scale shape and an option to make it removable, other job started was the bottom wing should come together fairly quickly if i can get in there.
Cheers,Dave.

All the major building now complete, going to redesign the uc over the next few days to make it fully functional.
I will try and set it up outside to get some better pictures.
Thanks,Dave.

Got back in the shed this afternoon did a drawing of the uc,and built this went together really well very strong too.
Now waiting for some 1/4 steel tube to arrive for the main legs then crack on and get it finished.

All the major building is now complete,i have put a good few hours thought into the outer srut fixings, what i came up with is simple to build and even easier to assemble the model.
There is a single bolt in each wing tip accessed via a tube in the tip. What you see in the pictures are captive washers just drilled the thread out of a t nut, there is a piece of ply same as used for the strut glued front and rear of the strut to stop twist, and the bolt pinches it all together.
The ply jigs are made from scrap 1/4 ply and are used to keep it all true while the struts are made and fitted.I am much happier with the shape of this one much more scale like,i guess i have to have a little time off now to get ready for Santa...merry christmas to all.
Dave.

Little bit more progress with the Dr1,tail skid is quite a simple thing to make just a little piece of oak made some bracketry out of 16g steel easy. The cockpit is also coming along,i did not want to look in the cockpit and see all the square balsa framework,so what i have done is built a cage out of 3/16 balsa dowel, brass tube in the corners to hold the bracing wires. The fabric panel at the back is a piece of solartex with some small eyelets pushed through and laced on with some strong thread. The whole thing then slides up from the underside, still a bit more to do on it but well chuffed.

Hi
A lovely model.
Some years ago I built one but it had a scale under cambered wing section and despite all the work involved it was a bit of a hand full to fly.
With the flight characteristics of the model displayed in your video, it would be well worth another go at building one
So, is there a plan available ? and what size motor did you use.
Thanks for your time
Arthur.

Hello Arthur,
Thank you for your kind words, the whole point of this project was to produce a model that looked very scale, whilst being both easy to build and fly. This is a revised version of the prototype in the video, revisions are to the outline only so hopefully it will retain it's superb qualities in the air.I do intend to produce a plan pack which will be a plan and a set of ribs, please keep watching for further details. The original was powered by a Zenoah 62 which was ample power it would take off on half throttle, this one will be powered by a fuji 64.
Thank Dave.

Really happy how today went, rigged the Dr1 for the first time since covering it and could not be more happy. It rigs really easy,CG is more or less spot on and the weight came out at 25.5 lb,target weight was 32 lb.Just paint and battery's too add,Fuji 64 fits reall well, can't wait to fly it now.

Well nearly done all the painting, just a few more markings to put on dirty it up a bit then put a bit of detail on it.It's all painted with cellulose brushed on,every bit is brushed as per full size, when all the weathering is done i will seal it with a water based satin varnish.
The scheme is Lother von Richtofen's jasta 11,he was an ace in his own right with 44 kills,i have done quite a lot of research on this aircraft some say it should have a yellow top wing, but the majority say it should be green,i prefare the green top wing.
Cant wait to fly this one i just hope it's as good as the first one.

At last a little bit better weather to try the new Dr1,a bit windy but haho, day didnt start well broke rudder loading it in car,so a quick repair and off to the field.Assembled the model takes minuets to do,quick check of systems and off we go,bit twitchy at first got way too much elevator movement, switched dual rate on both elevator and aileron 2 clicks of down trim and its flying hands off, superb flies really well very pleased, plans will be available soon.
