As some of my friends know I am building up a series of kits of 1/3 scale Goodyear Midget Racers, Some of the more popular prototypes are already available in 33% kits, I am trying to produce models of some of the others. The first air frame I designed and built is the 1949 Shoestring which fly’s very well and I am quite pleased with.

My next venture is the 1951 Loving Love, I have been working on the plans for the last 12 months, I have had the 1st set of parts cut and am about to start the build so I thought I would share my progress with you.

The parts are laser cut on liteply and balsa and i'm very pleased with the quality,it saves loads of time and increases the accuracy doing it this way.

so, stocked up with cyano here goes the build. Starting with the fus which is built on a central internal box, time taken getting this square is important and saves loads of problems later.

Then add the former's and the shape starts to appear, I love this bit as it looks like your making massive progress with little work.

welcome back, I have had visitors stay for the weekend so progress had been halted for a few days, anyway, the fus has progressed a little. I found a couple of mistakes in the former's i had drawn so these have been rectified and work continued. Its quite satisfying to find all the hard work on the drawing board actually works and the parts fit together.

I have put the Fus to one side and started on the wings. You may notice that i am not using a paper plan, this is because I intend to kit the models and it is cheaper to produce an A4 instruction book than getting large plans printed. I try and make all the parts slot together.

Because of the shape of the wing it cannot all lye flat on the board, so i drew 2 jigs, these are printed on A4 and stuck on MDF off cuts and then cut out on the bandsaw. These butt up to the first rib that is flat on the board and support the ribs that are flying.

Very nice Paul. I've seen your Shoestring fly quite a few times, it's very cool! All the best with Loving Love, look forward to seeing more of the build.
Simon.

Thanks Bob, hope to see you soon.
Alan thanks for the message. I know there's not a lot to comment on yet, it all basic balsa bashing.
Simon, Thanks for your kind comment.

Sorry iv'e not updated for a while but the work i have done recently has been pretty standard stuff and a bit boring, I have added all the wing internal reinforcing and fitted the joining tubes.

On the bottom bend in the wing I built in a 6mm ply fixing plate for the undercarriage to locate into.

The wings are then sheeted in 3mm balsa, and the L/E & T/E sanded to shape.

The undercarriage unit was built up from a pair of oleos welder onto a 3mm Aluminium plate.
