TA 152 1/5th SCALE

Postby stewart clifford » July 26th, 2011, 10:10 am

Latest customer project on the board is a TA 152 from the Anderson plans. The 152 was the stretched version of the FW 190D. The rear of the fuselage was extended and the wings were also made much longer, put in perspective a FW 190 at 1/5th scale spans 80" the 152 spans 114".
The very nicely laser cut kit and plans were supplied by Belair along with the Sierra retracts which are of very high quality and are as much like the fullsize as possible.
The wings split into 3 pieces and the rear end of the fuselage can also be removed.

Actually Stu me old pal, the TA 152 was a completely new airframe.
Very few common parts were used from the 190 Dora.
As it was the ultimate piston engined fighter from a family of aircraft it looks very similar, but just a few minutes with scale drawings show that it was a new design in its own right.
Looking forward to watching this one progress with your normal high standard, as its one of my favorite aircraft of all time.
I had one I knocked up in the 90s and test flew a small prototype kit in the 80s.
Both aircraft flew perfectly as if on rails.
Even in model form I would have to suggest that it is the perfect layout for effortless flying.
I've even thought of designing a homebuilt microlight along the same ratios, fully moulded in epoxy/nomex/carbon/glass of course.
Now that would be some pattern making.
Cheers Mike.

This could be your next composit kit Chocky, although the span is quite big it's still a manageable size, will fly on a 50cc petrol and not be anywhere near the 20kg mark.

The pictures below are of the tailplane which is built as two halves(top an bottom) then glued together before skinning.

Watching with interest Stewart as I have retracts, canopy, spinner etc all here for the exact same model myself........it'll look well alongside my 1/5 Dora :D

Had a small 1/12 electric version a few years ago......superb flier.

I've done a bit more now and I'd say build it Phil, the fuselage just needs the bottom sheeting now and I've had no problems with it so far, it's gone together really well.
The back end, which is removable now has the glassed tailplane fitted and the fin built over it.
I picked up the wing tubes at the Hop Farm so I can start the wings. The wing is a three piece so it will be really easy to rig and store.

If you put it alongside the Dora you're going to be taking up a lot of pit space. :D

Hi Dave

Yes I remember, you had the 190 with the Laser. I have done a quite a lot more to this but I have to get "her indoors" (when she has time) to resize the pictures for the site so I've not been able to add the recent updates. That said, the fusealge is glassed now, the removeable tail is nearly complete and I've started the centre sections of the wings. So far the Fuselage has been good to build, no problems really but the wing is just over built/complicated. Also despite there being something like 8 spars between ribs 4-8 between 3-4, 2-3 theres virtually nothing sutantial which runs all the way through, so I've changed the 1/8th balsa sheer web to ply and I'm looking at ways to add a bit more strength. I think the outer panels should go together a lot easier, fingers crossed.

Wow, I've finally learnt how to resize pictures all on my own, thanks to a bit of a tip from Willy Warbird to use paint brush.

The pics should give a rough idea where the build was up to last week. Since then I've almost finished the centre section and built most of one outer panel.
The center section has been a lot of work and in my opinion is way too over complicated/engineered. It's the only thing that lets it down build wise, everything else has been fairly straight forward and has worked well.

Looking good, I am enjoying the progress. Been thinking of a two part fuselage for my sky 120 so I would like to see your method of joining your model halves when ready, pretty please.

Hi Stewart......

coming on..... :)

i remade the elevators and rudder .......as the hinging was wrong for scale......almost got both halve's of the wings to the same state as well...there's a few things to watch out for on the wings......understanding the center section and what goes on with the sheet is one.....some of the ribs don't line up correctly....

keep it coming!
