The peoples projects

I've taken the liberty of creating this thread for people who don't generally put a full build thread on here of their projects. This idea came about at East Kirkby at the start of the season. We noticed loads of new models on the line, being tested an even some which were near completion, many of these models seemed to have just appeared from nowhere. So this thread can be used to put up just as much as you like just to give other members an the public a snippet of whats to come, it would, I think be good to also add a picture an text about models which are long term projects or on the back burner.
If you struggle with pictures, ask Dave Parry to sort it for you, he has plenty of time on his hands.
Or ask me how to re-size pictures by using paintbrush.

I'll kick it off with one of my many backburner projects, a 1/5th scale Gloster Gladiator. It's being built from the Jim Pepino plan and a laser cut short kit from Belair. The plan has been blown up from the old CAP jobby an has been slightly changed, it spans 80". Currently the lower wing and fuselage have been built an covered, when I get back on it the next job will be the tailplane. I'll put up some pictures as soon as my pc starts talking to my internet again.

1/5 scale 92" Jerry Bates Wildcat..............airframe & Robart retracts bought 2nd hand & picked up at Gaydon almost 2 years ago. A lot of re-work has been required with new control surfaces, hinges, linkages, repairing damage to the retracts, re-engineing from Laser V twin to a ZG62, new in-cowl muffler plus rebuilding 1 wing as 1 panel had the correct 2 degrees washout with the other 1 degree of wash in!!! It's then had a general tidy up, partial re-detail & a new colour scheme.

Much of the re-work is complete and most of it is back in primer ready for re-spray.......hope to be flying it alongside the other 2 Fighteraces 'Cats' for the 2013 season.

Nice one Phil an Steve, thats what I mean. Come on boys an girls I know theres plenty more out there, I know theres a 1/4 scale Hampden and Wellington being done out there and there must be loads more. I wonder what Mr Johnson is building? He hasn't done much for a while

Since moving into my new workshops back in May, I've been inundated with build requests for customers and now have 4 projects confirmed following the completion of the current one (Ziroli Corsair). Unfortunately, 3 of these 4 are unlikely to see the light of day flying in the UK as they are for foreign customers, but being as 2 of the 4 are very interesting projects, I thought I'd show a little of what's coming.....

The 1st is a 1/5.5 scale Engel Modellbau Dornier 335. Overall length is 100" with a wingspan of 98.5". To give an idea of scale, that's a 92" Wildcat below it, and an 83" FW 190A above it, so it's one BIG lump of an aeroplane.

As can be seen, it's been part built but has languished gathering dust for several years until I was asked to complete it ready to fly a couple of months back. The airframe arrived in the workshop a couple of weeks ago and is now in storage ready to make a start before Christmas.

Much of the basic construction is complete; the wings, stabs & all control surfaces are glassed and in 1st coat primer. Engines have been installed along with the long extension shaft for the rear prop. Rear engine is a standard ZG45, as is the front at present, but this is being changed out to a twin spark 3W 85 following the success of Evan Quiros over in Texas who has built & flown one of these on the exact same set-up.

The main deviation from the stock kit is that this is to be built as the 2 seat 'trainer' 335 with the 2nd cockpit. The turtle deck has already been added, but there is no canopy or framing, plus a 2nd cockpit tub will be required and detailed.

The 2nd comes in the form of a 122" span 1/3.4 scale FW 190D9

I am tasked with completing all of the master patterns for fuselage, cowl, gun cover plus cockpit canopy & frame, followed by producing all of the GRP tooling for a short run of kits once everything is delivered back to Germany. This model is currently under development by renowned German warbird builder Detlef Kunkel as a model to house the beautiful 220cc 'V4' 4 stroke engine he is developing in conjunction with this project. (Some of you may have seen the development thread for the engine over on RCScaleBuilder)

So far, the patterns have been generated in 3D CAD and the fuselage, cowl, gun hood & canopy 'milled' from high density foam. All foam parts have then been hand finished followed by 3 layers of 100g glass cloth with a flatting sand between layers. The wings in the kit will be skinned foam with a built up LE cuff around the retracts as well as built up fabric covered control surfaces. A basic set of skinned wings are being supplied to me for alignment purposes as well as to complete the wing faring area.

All glassed foam parts are being collected from Detlef next weekend and this is where I take over.........all parts are to be completed and fully detailed with as much surface detail as I can throw at it....... (at this scale, it's not like I'm short of space to!!!!)

More news as and when i get started...............

......and I couldn't leave it without showing the engine. I had a 'speechless' hour with Detlef at Flying Legends at Duxford back in July where I had the pleasure of looking over the almost complete #01 engine. A limited run of 20 of these engines are being built, #01 should be running over the next few weeks.

220cc V4 4-stroke with overhead cams and reduction drive........unfortunately another Germany company already offers a 3-blade 'D9' variable pitch paddle blade prop at 36" diameter that Detlef is intending running on this engine. Should be quite a sound when it's up and running.......... :twisted: :twisted:

Hi Alan

Plenty of full-size flat 4 and 6 aero engines rely on air cooling with suitably engineered ducting.......Detlef is an engine man by trade so I'm sure he'll cope. He's also working on a one off 'V6' version for himself, so I'm sure he's confident in suitable cooling for the V4 if he's inversting vast sums of money & time in an even more complex V6 version.

NLMFC (Baldock Mob)are doing a team build, 8 x Yak 50s, 1/4 scale , Z62, unitracts, smoke, lights etc.
Should be fun, or mayhem whichever comes first!:lol:

I am just impressed with those that can decide what they want to build, get on with it and produce something at the end of it!
