Radial Corsair Duo

Postby Trevor Wood » May 23rd, 2011, 11:44 am

Hi All,
May be of interest to the warbirders but a second composite arf Corsair complete with Moki 250cc radial and 3 blade prop etc has now been completed, test flown and the excemption obtained, the model is owned and flown by Dave Pearson and has again been beautifully put together by Tim Symonds, the model is in the colours of VF-17 the Jolly Rogers squadron and is aircraft #17 matching my own #15 plane which was finished and flown last year at a number of shows.

Dave and I have now had several flights together with these two perfectly matched aircraft, most recently over this weekend at the Greenacres fun fly event at Walsall on Saturday and at the Northwest Warbirds meeting at RAF Shawbury on Sunday in fairly breezy conditions,a few flying shots have been posted on another well know site, with a couple of static pictures attached below from this weekend, needless to say something of a buss to be able to fly these two heavy metal birds together with the radials on song and in sync.

A few more details, pilot figure, cockpit detail etc to be added to Dave's model to complete.

Neil told me he took over 1200 pictures on saturday at Cosford, I wouldn't be surprised if 1100 of them were of these two.
Fantastic stuff, didn't see them in the balbo though, chickens

Yeah, I have to admit - did go a bit OTT with the pictures. Even in the bad light the camera performed extremely well.

Have posted my thanks and appreciation to all involved in organising and creating this years Cosford in the General Discussion section, but for those interested in the Corsairs both Dave Pearson and myself were extremely pleased with their performance over the weekend,we have found from past experience that if something can go wrong with these machines it will do on the big occassion, but thankfully both radials behaved themselves, starting well and hopefully gave the right soundtrack to our flights, many thanks for the kind comments received,we enjoyed our flights.

Although Neil has sneeked me a preview of a couple of duo shots, his full Cosford portfolio will be well worth waiting for as allows.

Hi All,

As some of you know and/or indeed witnessed the Radial Corsair Duo were involved in a significant landing incident while displaying on the Showline at this years BMFA Nationals - I won't go into the circumstances which wrecked these two models, but would just say that hard lessons were learned, in particular the importance of having spotters who keep pilots informed at the earliest opportunity of any unfolding situations.
The two Corsairs at first sight appeared beyond repair - and very unfortunately Dave Pearson's #17 remains in that condition, my own example #15 faired slightly better with only what has proven to be cosmetic damage so is being repaired - unfortunately though it's Moki radial suffered damage requiring repair at the factory - the completed model will be re-examined / re-tested as required by the scheme and if time and other committments permit may be joined by a new radial friend next season.

Seasons greetings and all that stuff - Trevor Wood LMA687

Glad to hear you bouncing back Trevor.
It was the most painful thing to witness in its entirety from a third party perspective.
The tragedy was that it ended what was one of the most pure Warbird display slots by professionals on the circuit.
I'd still be happy to take a look at Daves re pro repair should he wish.
Look forward to seeing you in the new year.

Nice one Trevor, you know my thoughts on this. I look forward to seeing it in the air again, and hopefully at the Fighter meet next year, have a good Christmas and speak soon.
Chris
