Here you can see that the saddles for the air tanks have been put as far forward as possible in the fuselage.

I don't know if it is immediately obvious that the self tapping threads hold the removable Battery/Rudder Servo tray it is shaped like a garden shovel and recessed on the sides to inter lock in to the fuselage former.

You can see below how I have had to file down the spar running from left to right of the fuselage/Picture this was to allow the Sierra Tail wheel to recess fully, the underside was then reinforced with 1.5mm Ply

Bellow you can see the fuselage up side down looking at where the Battery/Rudder servo Tray sits.
you will see the addition of a spruce spar which the tray locates in to and with the addition of the Carbon tissue later will give/offer a greater bond to the bulk head....

Above some of you will have noticed that I have installed four extra formers that tie in to the Bulk Head and run back to the cockpit.

These were made of bass, "Iv got 112cc of Engine/7.5Lb + Weight Hanging/Pulling on what should be a dozen or so Balsa Stringers" (No chance...)

So what I have done is to splice the big Balsa stringers and insert Bass and run it down through and past the rear of the cockpit 2/3 of the way back on the Wing

You will notice the introduction of additional strengthening fillets neither of these were on the Plan. I have also added the hinge blocks

As you will know by now I am trying desperately to create a really nice SCALE Model and the Meister tail isn't quite there... So I have began to re scale the hinging of this model by using piano wire and blocks

I also introduced the bracing spar which is webbed on the front edge, the plate in the centre retains 2 x 5mm Carbon tubes which all comes together and will give rigidity, there is a saddle plate in the fuselage that the Carbon fits in to

Here you will notice the exit point for the Closed Loop for the Rudder and what was to be the Push Rods for the Elevator which has now been Stopped

Again the Bass brace in evidence on the Rudder also, "I have to say that I am suppressed at this model not having this in situe from the Plan...? Even if it is all covered in 3mm Balsa"

You will see that the Balsa ruder location key has also been replaced with 6mm Bass

Here you will see the webs now in place and notice the introduction of the Ply/Balsa Servo bays starting to take shape

The Ply plate on the bottom is to Securely/Snugly Hold/Support the servo while in situ to prevent any play

Here you have the finished product minus the fitted Servo. The covers are held down M3 bolts on all corners tied in by self threading inserts

Bellow is the channelling that was put in place for the Servo wires which will then exit in to the fusalage

Here you have a very bad picture of the start of my Rotary Drive System (RDS) which will be used in the Ailerons in order to try and conceal as much as possible.

These were produced for me by a good Friend who has kindly offered to assist me with all my metal working needs (Bryan your the best..)

(I'm sure you will find time to finish crafting that 50cc Radial of yours!)

Wow! You sure are getting on with this! Il have to get my finger out! LOL I see you have put servo hatches in the tail Plane? Are you not worried about adding weight at the back?

Hi Dave,

I am and it wasn't my intention to go this way (I was Instructed to do it this way....!) by my Inspectors, if you look at a coupe of the fuselage pictures closely you will see the Orange 3mm piano wires that I had previously fitted but were asked to remove "That was fair enough"

But I have since noticed I think...? Steve Rickets as adopted a push rod system on his P-47!
I could be wrong but from pictures Iv seen in the Magazines it looks to be that way.

I have put the air tanks way up front and also the Servos, I will have operational Cowl Flaps as additional nose weight and possibly a large silencer, so I am trying to get it all up front, Oh sorry plus 4 x Lipo packs on the bulk head, 2 x Receiver Packs 1 x Ignition, 1 x Lighting

But I am very mindful of the weight yes.

Good spot! I do have pushrods on my P-47....but it is only the Topflite 50cc version. I would go the route you are doing now if I were to build a bigger one!

I understand why the use of 3mm wire push rods was asked to be changed but a model of this size could still use servo's at the front if the elevators had a suitable joiner and a heavy duty carbon rod was used that was supported through the fuselage. I know of many warbirds that are done this way and use either a single high power servo or 2 servos coupled to power it.
I'm not against servos at the back other than the compensating weight needed at the front but it sounds like you have enough at the front to sort that issue. I'll be interested to see what the final weight comes out at. There are many in the states at 50-60lb!

Hi Greg,

Its interesting to find out other peoples points of view, and here how others tackle things like this. I had also purchased 5mm Carbon Push Rod with Alloy connectors, it was quite heavy but some how just looked wrong, the Original aspiration was to use 2 x 14Kg Servos and the wire ran through all of the fuselage formers, that part was rock solid. It was connected in the centre with a brass threaded joiner due to the length of the fusalage, as the piano wire was also threaded and would have used additional grub screws to ensure absolute security, the concern arose around the length of exposed wire at the tail end and the "Possibility" of some flex...

Off the top of my head the length of wire exposed was around 4-4.5" I'm not grumbling, please don't get me wrong but the added Ply and Balsa with the addition of 2 x Metal geared Servos and Nuts and Bolts (Ratio of 3 x 1 weight on the Nose) will really add up on the nose but at this point I have no other option

(Bolting in to the side of the fuselage wasn't an option for me..... )

Hi Dean

Have a look at http://veaseyjet.com/VeaseyJet/Model_bu ... uilds.html to see what I mean. I think the Meister Zero build shows it best but they all use the same technique.

I haven't flown any warbirds (fighters) over 40lb but most seem to be over that in the states so must perform OK.

My Meister P47 weighs in at 43lb and flies fine on a Zenoah 80.

Nothing wrong at all with pushrods on models of this size.......as Gregg rightly says, as long as they are rigid & supported inside the fuselage they are fine. Even piano wire can be fine but not just running through formers, if it's run in plastic tubes that give support (along the entire length......but not so much they become tight), they are fine.

Below are photos of the elevator end of a 1/4 scale Mk.1a Spit + the elevator torque rod assemblies being used in a current 1/5 Bearcat build. 8 swg piano wire with twin 1/16" steel horns sandwiching an M3 ball link. Note also the brass tube bush which will be bonded into a ply support hanger notched into false TE on the tail plane giving additional support to the torque rod assembly.

The Spit used twin 10mm carbon tube pushrods with machined aluminium end fittings epoxied & cross pined in place. These were drilled & tapped M3 to take M3 threaded rod which in turn was sleeved in 3mm I/D carbon tube to stiffen. The Bearcat will be identical but with 6mm rods instead of 10's as the run to the back is a lot shorter. I found 6mm on something as large as the 1/4 Spit that little bit too flexible.

WOW . . This has brought up a few answers! Lol I like the carbon push rod idea, being shown by one of the TJD guys how to do it, never had a fail on me, but I do cyno one carbon tube Ito another, and it's rock sold, the only plane ive had with tail plane servos was my Surginson p47, it made it tail heavy causing lots of weight up front, and was around 42lb.

Good afternoon all,

Well I only wish that I had posed this question before starting the build "or" prior to having my first inspection.

I would like to thank all of you for taking the time to respond so appropriately, sadly its a little too late for me now short of building a new Tail section but they do say every day is a School Day and I've just spent 3 Days in 3 Schools Building the BMFA's Model Darts with the Pupils of all ages and abilities. The School I did yesterday was a Special Needs one and what I learned from them is invaluable and more to come, so I fully believe that what you guys have given me will most certainly assist and better me as a builder in both this this and other projects
