Good afternoon Dean,
Tight, I think not, did say you could have the 50cc radial but you wont build an aircraft to match it, yours keep getting bigger and bigger. (I do mean aircraft) Hehehe ......!

I'm enjoying this build. Fancy a meister p47 my self once my dakota is finished. I just need to talk the guy whos building my dak to help out and give him a 12 month break ;-)

Hi all,

I know you are all a great source of knowlage,

So can I trouble you again please....!

Trim Tabs of the size used on Meisters P47, is it possible to use functional ones,or are there specific reasons why they would not work or worse make the Aircraft unsafe in flight...?

The origin of a Trim Tab was to ease the force on the stick in the hand of the pilot, but as I say can this be transferred in to examples like this...?

Second Question,

Can you purchase of the shelf a "Landing Light" to fit the Meister P-47...?

I have something that is the perfect for the job in form and size, but I can't get that pure Chrome finish on the Mirror.

Might some one have an answer to either questions please...

Personally, I wouldn't.......a small amount of 'permanent' trim on a tab will be permanently loading the servo & drive system.

If you do want to use the tab in a functional way, then using them as balance or boost tabs is the way to go. I have only ever done this on very large models (100lb+) but the basic principle is that the tab has a horn as per the main control surface, but is connected via a short pushrod to the TE of the fixed flying surface. As the (for eg:-) elevator moved up, the tab moved down & vice versa. In effect, the elevator now has it's own elevator......down going movement of the tab will help force the elevator up, so lightening loads on the servo.

These photos show the basic principle.......very functional but not scale on the majority of subjects.

My current P-47 project has a full lighting system from Braincube Aeromodels. This included the white LED & a chrome conical reflector for the flip down landing light. The flip down mechanism was however all done from scratch.

Not cheap but excellent quality, very easy to set up and VERY bright.......I used them in last years Do335 build as well.

In reverse order, I too have a full lighting system from Oliver in Dundee (Braincube) £130 and it is worth every penny.

I believe I have what you describe but the light fitment/ unit in your fingers I wasn't aware that he did those, I believed that to be part specific to CARF, or have I misunderstood you?

He didn't mention that when I spoke to him, either you have a special treatment or I need to speek to him again?

Hi Phill,

I was suggesting as you describe balance Tabs, but the Meister has quite large tabs, I haven't yet assed the amount of movement it might give so it could be quite small....?

Maybe...

I like the idea, it wouldn't be overly complicated to hide it within the control surface and fix in place,

As someone mentioned to me previously "Just because something can be done doesn't mean that it should be done..."

Good point and I agree,

I just want to know that if I did do it I/it would be safe in the sky's

K.I.S.S. . . . . Keep It Simple Stupid! Cut out trim tab and re fix it making it look more scale with linkages etc . . . . But I would not have them working, unless necessary as in the case of the Skyraider Phil built.

The reflector isn't a CARF part, it came from Oliver.......this was maybe 6-8 months ago but I just asked him what he had suitable and this is what he sent me.........it just happened to be a perfect fit for this 110" P-47 so may need trimming sown a little to suit the Meister. Other than the reflector, everything I have pictured has been made from scratch.

For a Meister size model, I agree 100%......not necessary & it's just adding complexity & weight. Like I said, the only time I have used them is on BIG 100lb+ models. I was simply trying to explain a possible solution not suggesting you do it on this model.

OK,

For the eagle eyed amongst you will have spotted the extra 1mm strip of Balsa either side of the Spine on the Rudder, this was because the spine and the ribs were not sized correctly.....

Both items fit the plan perfectly but not each other ... :evil:

"Another Monster Meister Alignment Balls Up...!"

All the Ribs were sanded back to align with each other but not the Spine prior to sheeting but, taking the route of least resistance I applied the Balsa strip either side, the end result being that the Rudder was wider than the Fin :twisted:

The solution to this predicament was to attach the shroud to the top of the fin and feather it back with 1mm Balsa to blend, apposed to sanding back in to the 3mm Balsa skin

Not how I had planed for this to have gone...

As there is an 18mm block that makes the hinge it never occurred to put the fin and rudder together to see the correct alignment :oops:

more fool me I guess

The Tail Plane is now pretty much finished , I have to remove the Balance tabs and re attach but over all I'm quite satisfied with the way its turned out

Jus t for those of you who might be thinking that only two hinge points on an elevators this size shouldn't be considered, then look below an you might just see the third hidden hinge made from G10 I hope you will approve. it works really well and is very discreet "I like it"

Iv never had to do shrouds before and I was quite intimidated by doing this but a friend showed me a little trick to recess the balsa to accommodate the Ply Shroud and it really works.

My friend here hides his light under a bushel as he himself is the proud owner of a Scratch Built 120" Hurricane. As yet this big Girl has not seen the Sky, but it is all but finished and ready to go.

He can lay claim being the proud owner again of a scratch built 3 Cylinder Radial which runs like a Swiss Watch and is now in the final stages of finishing another scratch built 50cc 5 Cylinder radial,

Good afternoon all,

LANDING LIGHTS

I had a really interesting chat today with Oliver Malham from Braincube www.braincube-aero.com In Dundee, this guy if you haven't seen him yet hand crafts and build's LED,s to fit to our models, never have you met a more helpful and imaginative engineer.

We were discussing Landing lights to fit the Meister and many other planes that use a 40mm Dia with a depth of 55mm (Front to Back) that then Hinge/Pivot down on landing approach currently there is no such off the shelf item available this may be about to change.....

Oliver's LED's really need to be seen to be appreciated. It was mentioned today that there are plenty of £15-£20 off the shelf LED Sets that people are more familiar with such as the thing you get on a Foam-E Airframe but these are a thing apart...

A friend and I were having a look when they arrived in my work shop just running them off an old 4.8v Nimh Battery, I kid you not one single Micro Metal LED completely illuminated the whole of my garage 8-)

Our eyes were left sore and watering..

When put next to the typical Shop bought LED sets there is just no competition,

So gents watch this space for landing lights and get out there go look him up......!
