Rudder now done just final fixing into the airframe

Saw this model in person today,one word springs to mind superb the quality of the hinges are stunning.Can't wait to see the finished model.Well done Dave.

Started work on the fuselage now, cut out the panels for the tail wheel access and rudder & steering servo's. These also helped in accessing the stabilizer area for fitting the support woodwork. I will be making the tail wheel steerable for safer ground handling

More progress on the tail feathers and tail wheel mount.

All work has now stopped due to a major issue with the fuselage which is going to take a bit of sorting out. The error is in this picture

The tail incidence should be correct as the model was built to be 100% correct. If you look at all air to air pictures of all full size spitfires in flight they all fly with a slight down trim,,, we actually know paul bonhomme who flys mh434 and i have chatted in depth regarding the spitfires flying characteristics and one of the first things he pointed out was the need for down trim in level flight,,, I personally wouldn't alter anything. Just keep an eye on your trim settings. Depending on the engine weight and how much nose weight you like to fly with,,, the trim should be slightly on the downside,,, i think all models fly better slightly nose heavy and as a general rule of thumb the C/O/G should be a 1/3 back from the leading edge at the root,,, this should apply to all aircraft in the ww2 fighter range,,, Ive flown pretty much all variants of model spitfires and ww2 fighters in general and have found this theory to be true,,, no doubt others will argue.

Anyone that seriously thinks a Spitfire will still be one piece after a flight with the CG at 'a third back at the root' is kidding. A third of anything is 33.3%.
Expect the roller-coaster handling to end with a large hole in the ground.
Spitfire death will occur if it is any further back than 27%.
At quarter scale that is 160mm measured from the root leading edge.

I agree with you Mike, I will be planning on 27%. Done a bit more on the resetting of the Tail feathers, now fixed at 1.5 degrees, along with this I have re-seated the wing fillets on the center section, one side was perfect from the word go but the starboard side needed a little surgery to get it to the same fit, in doing so it set the fin vertical and I have had to reset the tail plane parallel to the wings which was a bit out. This was my fault, I should of set the wing seat first before fitting the tail feathers etc. I can get on and re=glass in the tail plane mounts now. I am really pleased at how she is looking now.

after inspecting the mould i can only agree,.,.its off line,,.,.no one noticed.im shocked!,,.,.still sorted now,.,.

Well I am back where I was a couple of weeks ago but this time all correct if my settings are good. I have reinforced the tail plane mount with carbon cloth for extra strength and the tail planes are a nice snug fit into the sockets. I also now have some clearance on the rudder horn with the elevator full down, which I was struggling with before. Just a bit of filling to blend the repair in and start moving on to the bulkheads when the new engine arrives next week.

Both sides filled now, just a little final stopping to do when primed, Rudder servo mount glassed in and linkage set up. Still waiting for the engine so I can crack on with the Bulk heads.

At Last the engine has arrived, the down side is finding time to get started making the reduction drive and fitting it.

call me daft but the heads look like theyre 90° out. surely they wont be getting the best cooling as they are?

They are made all in one so they are as designed, the plan is to duct the air across the engine not along it so the head fins will be correct.

No progress at present due to lack of interest and engine issues. Was planning to use a ZDZ 210 but after waiting some 5 months what arrived was not acceptable due to damage in transit. I have been waiting to get a replacement engine which I have now been told will NOT happen and that I have damaged it and I will have to accept the engine repaired which I am not prepared to do as the supplier says that he will be doing the repair not ZDZ. As you can see from the pictures the drive hub had taken quite a beating along with a bent fin, and bent linkages on the carbs which have dug into the carb bodies. Also you can see loads of swarf in the threads for the prop bolt so I am suspicious as to the general hygiene of the engine. The supplier says it is superficial damage and does not effect the quality of the product, I have argued that the damage to the hub could of caused damage to the front bearing at least and due to the nature of the damage and the engine needs to be returned to ZDZ. I am really P----d off with it all and now just want my money back so I can source another engine, possibly a 4 pot.

Thats been dropped, you know as well as i do what the shock load can do to the crank and bearings, hope its a UK agent,
