I thought Tony Hooper was our liaison officer with CAA. or am i missing something here. Surely after all that blurb has been issued there will be a few points that have to be discussed at committee level and decisions being made. I don't see the point of posting 13 pages of blurb as its the same as small print you either have to accept or decline, and if you decline you are not going to get any further. If there are changes to what we can and cant do i am sure Tony Hooper and the Committee will advise accordingly.

Tony Hooper referred to this at the AGM, and reported that he has been in discussion with the CAA.
As Robbie says, Tony is looking after our interests, and as Rob Buckley often says "the sky is not about to fall".
What is certain however is that we will not be exempt from CAA charges.

Not really Bob, your only talking of £171 for a 2 day show. Gate takings from the shows must be able to cover this, either that or a small increase on the gate price to do so.

Shows can easily absorb that cost or recoupe through very small increases. No need to panic.
As with all public sector bodies the CAA have to be seen to be moving with the times and generate income to satisfy their Whitehall paymasters. Its happening across all the public sector from police to councils and NHS to civil service. It's not good but its the way of the world.
As I understand it the CAA are a broadly sensible body who get what us aeromodellers are about. I have confidence that Tony, Rob and others have it all in hand.

We will be discussing the CAA's proposed charging regime with them a week today.

To help with the discussion, has anybody got any sensible reasons why those of us who make use of the CAA's services for over 20Kg exemptions shouldn't pay for them?

What they are proposing to charge for model shows is neither here nor there in the grand scheme of things, and will likely cost them more to collect than they raise, but we shall see. It's not the end of life as we know it, much as some seem to be desperate for that day to come.

Well, unless the CAA are going to be conducting the inspection process and visiting, advising, recording and submitting details of over 20kg models, then I would imagine that its the LMA itself that carries the burden of work and relevant expenses, with costs to the CAA limited to their final considerations and issuing of certification etc. One would hope any charges will reflect this . . .

I read it that there was a charge which went up as the number of exhibits? 30 or more amounted to thousands of pounds, and there seem to be 'extra' charges too.

Its all a bit complicated but I can see the CAA making a fair few quid if I am reading this right. And they are desperate for money, despite the fact that EASA wants to do their work...

Those sliding scale charges per item are for fullsize air displays (which is one of the reasons we didn't have any in 2016), the new proposed charge for model displays is a flat fee per day.

It's true that the bulk of the cost and work for the Over 20Kg scheme is borne by the LMA, which is provided free of charge to members. In ''Aviation' charge rates the proposed CAA fee is for several minutes of work, it just stings when it's got to be paid out of your own pocket!

Im afraid to say.. But if it is we will be charged for over 20kg models... We have 2 choices.... Like it or lump it.. Its not really up for discussion is it?
If people aspire to build large models, they understand the huge costings involved, So what is another cost on top to do something you love...

If it was your local club membership, and it went up by say £50.00.. you would pay it to keep your spot in the club and to fly!... So no difference..

In my opinion, Do what is needed!


I will add tho... It would be better if the fees were payable on the successful passing of the proving flights... It would be unfair to do so prior... Most full size planes fly! Models do not
