I glass the pieces in three sections. Usually I do the ends, then do the bottom, then the tops.
If you knock down the dry edges, they remain flush with the surface.
There is an overlap of the top over the bottom (seam/edge) but this is blended when I put on a second skim coat of resin to fill the weave.
You can just primer and fill as well, but normally I do a second coat. It still feels rough after the second coat, but I then use a razor blade, rubbing it back and forth to smooth out the surface.
