DLE 55RA Silencing

Postby John Greenfield » December 13th, 2018, 6:27 pm

Hi Guys

Has anyone tried exhaust bungs (pepper Pot) in the stock silencer supplied with the DLE 55RA and does it work to quieten the motor? I can accept some power loss but have very little room to fit a bigger silencer. I have been told that just blocking one outlet of the silencer will do the same job as a bung ??? but I can't see how this would be the case.
If anyone has any real world experience of these bungs please let me know.

Thanks

John

I can't speak about the DLE 55 but I have two engines with Pitts style Chinese silencers each with twin outlets. Removing one outlet completely certainly helps and took some of the bark of the noise. The other is on a 26cc two stroke and I blocked off one hole and also reduced the diameter of the second to (Off the top of my head) 10mm The engine is being strangled somewhat but for the model it is in, it still has plenty of power and it is probably the most quiet of the fleet.
Crude and unscientific? - probably but also easy and effective.

There was some discussion a while back about an article on 'The Sid King method of silencing engines' Did it ever come to light? I don't remember seeing it

John - two or three years ago I made a couple of exhaust restrictors for the engines in Ted Allison's Rapide. The engines were two DLE 55's.
We tried various configurations for hole pattern and size and finished up with pepper-pot arrangement of five 3.3mm holes in each restrictor. The restrictors were an inch long and secured by grub screws inside the exhaust outlet pipe.
No notable reduction in engine performance and a big reduction in noise.

I found 2 closely fitting lengths of Ali tube that would push into the outlets, then drilled about 6 holes in each one in the part that would be in the silencer body, pushed them in and secured with a cross bolt. Took about 10 mins and took most of the cackle out.

I sent the complete article to Dave for him to publish as he requested.
At present it has not appeared.
The Sid King silencer will without doubt solve your problem as the so called pepper pot system is not how sids work !! Its based upon a gun silencer !!
I can supply the article if required as Ive made many of these and I swear by them .

Hi Paul
There will be an article on the Sid king silencer coming in the LMA journal shortly. These will definitely work to make your engine a lot quieter.
If you want a copy, I can email it to you before the journal comes out.

Mikes reply to Paul Hughes in June.
I am quite sure this article would be of interest to many members. If it has not appeared I cannot understand why.

Hi John I have made a few of Sid King silencers - mostly for Zenoah 38’s - work very well

Last one I made was for a Chinese CRRC 45 - quietened the bark completely - very successful ,should work well on a DLE 55 ,far better than pepper pots which I found restricted the engine and caused some over heating.

All

Thanks for your replies. Seems like I need to build some of the "Sid King" type silencers. Now I need to see the article to know how !!!

Mike was great earlier in the year when I raised the subject of an exhaust for an upright Z38.
He kindly sent me all the details to fabricate the Sid King silencer although in the event I solved my problem another way
Thanks again Mike

Big thanks to Andrew Taylor and Mike Ellis who both sent me the Sid King article.
Having read it all it does seem to be something we should run in the Journal if Sid would give permission.

I made a double piped one for a CRRC 45cc - a few pics show a half made one - the box section and tubing bought from B&Q plus some scrap steel plate for ends and blanking pieces. All silver soldered together.
