Foreign calls for a model for sale anyone?

Postby MarkPhillipson » January 4th, 2020, 7:34 pm

I have a Tiger Moth for sale on the forum and a gentleman has left a message from a number that appears to be from Martinique.

Obviously it could be genuine (though there is no practical way of shipping such a plane abroad at anything other than outrageous cost) but it could also be a scam. If it is genuine and the chap is a LMA fan reading this I don't want to cause any offence but it is odd. LMA is not the sort of site to get dodgy enquiries - one would hope!

Have any others on the forum had similar "odd" enquiries? - as if there are many then it must be dodgy (they're just running through a list until they get a bite).

Cheers!

I have been a target for money laundering from a bmfa advert. If the buyer wants to arrange his own collection and pay by cheque DO NOT GET INVOLVED!

I have sold stuff (not model related) to a guy from Bulgaria (yeah I know!) he arranged pickup and the guy he got to pick it up was there dead on time and paid cash. But I was very dubious, and this one certainly sounds dodgy.

Hi Mark
I too have been contacted by someone in Nigeria about buying a large glider that I had for sale, I like yourself was very suspicious at the time, I did respond to them, but being Nigeria I decided to agree the sale on the proviso that he paid all of the costs
(Model, packing & transport taxes etc) in full and in advance. Guess what? never heard from them again.

PLEASE DON'T GO THERE AND LEAVE YOURSELF OPEN TO A SCAM.

Take care Dave

Many thanks for the answers. He has also just emailed saying he will collect the plane and pay cash in person in February. He did offer to leave a deposit by Paypal which seems odd as that would have left him exposed. He says he is currently on holiday in Martinique (so it it is a long holiday!) but his name suggests he is Spanish or Latin American.

He hasn't negotiated on price which is also dubious but he did ask how much the GBP price was in dollars. It could still be genuine of course.

In the last six or seven years, I have been into buying and selling antiques, mainly specialising in antique silver which is all sold through eBay, and I have sold loads of stuff abroad, even to China, Russia, Korea, as well as USA, Canada, Australasia and of course Europe, and I must say that all have been genuine buyers. I do use eBay's Global Shipping Program, as they handle all the customs etc. and once they have it, it is their responsibility, so when an item has gone missing, or got broken, it is covered by them, so I'm not the loser. I have had more messers selling modelling stuff in this country than anywhere else, having said that, I would be very suspicious of African countries, as their scamming activities are well known but would happily deal with a European or western buyer, providing you follow all the safety aspects of a sale.

I recently sold and sent some new, old stock Tex covering to a buyer in cypress, as he said, he couldn't get the stuff over in his country, so needed to buy for sources here, he paid the price including postage to Cypress, which was dearer than the roll covering, he paid a secure payment, and I shipped him the covering, so you never know, always worth following a sale lead up.
