Finally the good weather arrived in the north west over last weekend,and this slowed the progress down because the other local guys twisted my arm and convinced me to leave the workshop and spend the weekend down at our flying site !!!! so the nose cone hasnt been completely planked as expected,but several evenings work has seen a good section covered,plus as can be seen in the piccies,i made a re-enforced plywood floor just in case i need to add nose ballast.Rip ties etc have been fitted already to make it easier if the need arises,and a hatch is being left under the nose for access.I have also started cutting formers for the cockpit area,and as soon as the planking is finished and rubbed down,the cockpit build will be my next job---hopefully this coming weekend.

All the nose planking has now been finished,and ready for final rub down and filler where needed,the basic Cockpit formers have now been glued in place as per piccy.I hope to start balso sheeting this today ,looking more like a Vulcan nose shape now !!!

Its been slow going over the last few weeks---with being away at East Kirkby and good weather keeping me away from the building shed---but have finally completed the planking on the cockpit area,just a few hours needed to rub into shape now and i can sort the windows etc before filling and glassclothing--DAVE

Hi Dave what kind of plywood do u use for the vulcan new build? and it is just the aerilons on the outer wings no flaps in the inner wings? as I have a plan to build one 8ft wingspan 90 4 stroke pusher etc what servos would u recommend for the size of my plane ?? i have an old futaba challenger 6 channel 35mhz that use 355 servos I am not too sure it is strong enough for this plane.

Andy--you would be advised to ring Richard at Falcon Aviation---he has designed and cut several sizes of Vulcan kits recently,including the size you are talking of--he will help you and answer all your questions---DAVE

After all the phone calls etc about how the Vulcan is progressing,i thought i would up date ---since April,i have done very little work on the build,mainly due to the show season keeping me occupied most weekends thro the summer,plus all the work with the events team organising several of our big shows,and even thou we have a few more weekends away yet ,my involvement has slowed down,which has allowed me to start thinking about the Autumm building and where to go next on the mammoth project !!!!
This last weekend ,i put the unfinished nose and cockpit section on the bench ,and started the job of rubbing down and filling,this was done several times to get a reasonable finish on the cockpit area----later i intend glasscothing this area before working on the rest of the nose area,this is due to the size of the area ,and the problem of dinging it every time i try and turn it over to work on---

The cockpit has now been fine filled and ready for the first coat of glass cloth before retiring for the evening,i have used pond sealer to paint the glass on,i have had good results with this in the past,plus its easy to rub down,which i will do in the morning and recoat

wow the glass looks good thanks for your advise falcon etc it is just that everything is bigger and etc in the LMA world I am normally used to with 48 to 60 inch span planes etc !!! thanks again.

Andy---no probs,i am sure Richard will help you.Also ,it doesnt have to be mega big,there are many impressive smaller models in the LMA as well,including leccy powered etc,we cater for all !!!!

Dave , what you could try, as you seem to have lots of space, is knocking up two purpose made tressle supports that hold a tube in some sort of bearing/former arrangement.
That way you could mount the wingless model and spin the thing over to any angle to work on.
You could do the same for the wings.

The fullsize glider servicing people I have been involved with in the past, use them exclusively.

using Pond sealer is a very good idea! however what it is like straight onto a epp foam? i am building a cap 232 7ft wingspan with strengthen fuseledge i wonder glassing straight on to epp foam will the pond sealer burn the foam??

i WAS TELLING MY FRIENDS THA U WERE BUILDING A 20FT WINGSPAN VULCAN THEY WERE ROLLING THE EYES and thinking I had been on the beer early!! it is gonna be a monster!! u are the man! hehe will your son Andy build bigger victor too?? to eep that vulcan company in the air!??

Hi Andy , sorry my models are going the other way ,the victor is big enough for me , I'm building a 12 ft Valliant instead for 2 Wren supersports it will be finished intime for the 2011 season .

Hi Dave I am not sure if your current and the new vulcan model has flaps?? I am looking at my seven foot wingspan vulcan for the wrexham model club powered by 90 four stroke engine it has just elevator and ailerons mixing etc what is the set up on yours?? it is splited into two on each wing outer as ailerons and the inner as elevators?? Airbrakes too?

Andy--sorry i havnt replied to you,have been away at LMA shows for a couple of weeks,but now back on the build.Vulcans dont have flaps--all the wing surfaces are elevons as per full size---they do have lift dumpers that come out of the top of the wing surface,and i intend fitting these after talking to the current chief Vulcan XH558 pilot who came to our Rufforth show--i think they will be worthwhile.

The nose section has now had several coats of pond sealer ,refilled with stopper etc ,and ready for its last coat of sealer before primer--so while this was drying,i started to work on the fuselage again---i want to get the fin in a finished state before Gaydon,so to do that ,i needed to sort out the tubes and fixing method--this is now done ,and all stringers in the top crutch of the fuzelage ready for balsa planking this week---once this is done,i will hinge the rudder and balsa plank that as well,hopefully next weekend--

Another few afternoons on the build this week,and as you can see in the piccys,the spine is now basicaly balsa planked ready for a final rubdown---the fin now slots on and fixings have been aligned--all ready now for hinging the rudder etc ,and a few days work planking the fin/rudder assembly--hopefully this time next week should see this section ready for glasscloth---

Hi Dave been keeping an eye on the vulcan build I will start on mine during xmas alth it is 8ft wingspan with pusher but on yours I see in the pics especially the last pic u said u will power the 20% vulcan with 4x .160 turbines?? in the pics I see only one outlet circle cut out? or have u changed mind and go with 2 turbines??
