Trevor you say you dont know why you are bothering with unseen detail, reminds me of when i went to the IPMS nationals, a while ago( a must see event, if you are a modellor of anything ) a chap was doing a build of a atchbox large series Lysander, in the fuzz, he was istalling all sorts, oxygen bottles at the rear of the fuzz, etc, i asked him why, wen the detail cannot be seen, his answer ? i know its there, such was the pride in his work, your like that, on the same day, i stopped by a display stand, to see a three leg jet undercart sitting on a polished wooden plinth, but no aircraft, whats this, i asked? stealth fighter he say :D :D :D :D i was about the 20th today that got caught out!!!!!!

There was a 1/4 Sea Fury on the Mackay stand at Cosford a couple of years ago - looked gorgeous it did :D

Which one of these is that one?

Hi All
Have been away on business for the past week so not much done I'm afraid, however grabbed some time on Sunday and installed the main instrument dash, gyro gunsight, cockpit floor, rudder pedal scuff plates and the right hand control panel - a couple of shots to show how it is coming, left hand control panel and throttle quadrant to be completed and installed next.

Will be moving onto the pilot figure this week which as mentioned previously will use an Aces of Iron 1/4 scale WWII bust as a base, with a blue foam torso together with arms/hands and boots from the 1/4 scale Indiana Jones doll bought for £20,unfortunately you could not really use this figure in a model out of the box since it is so heavy.

If the results work out OK will post a few pictures.

Hi All,
Well I have spent a bit of time this week working on the pilot figure which as mentioned previously was always going to be something of a Frankenstien affair, since unfortunately I have been unable to source a reasonably convincing full body 1/4 scale Warbird pilot from any where on the planet,so I have ended up making my own using an Aces of Iron 1/4 scale WW2 head and shoulders resin moulding as a base, extending the body with blue foam and then grafting on the lower arms and hands together with bits of the clothing from the cheap 1/4 scale Indiana Jones doll which is readily available.
The finished body was sprayed with humbrol enamel which has taken quite well to the clothing, the rest of the figure, head, life vest and straps etc have been painted in enamels and artist oils,a little bit more fine detail painting will be done together with work on the goggles to tone down the blue before 5 minute clear epoxy is applied to create the lens, the finished figure is also extremely light.

A few pictures taken late last night of the thing in 'the office' - hope to get the cockpit finished next week, with only the control column,seat/harness and the left hand instrument panel remaining.

As I said above Trevor, I saw this one a couple of years ago at Cosford and thought it was stunning, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it when it's finished :D

Managed to grab some time this week and have almost completed the cockpit and pilot,a few shots below, for those interested the control column was made from an ali tube with the handle carved from balsa then soaked in thin cyno, the gaiter is from blue foam coated in epoxy,a seat was made along with the left hand side instrument panel and throttle quadrant etc ( most of which cannot now be seen ) - the seat harness used bits of ali, paper clips and ribbed tape.

Also managed to locate a bit of North Korea map circa 1950.

Will try and get the model completely assembled and get a few shots in the near future - test flights are going to wait until the climate warms up a bit.

Andy and Alan - appreciate your feedback regarding the Sea Fury, hopefully some of the short circuit detailing techniques I have mentioned in my various posts may have been of some use to others - that's part of what the forum is all about afterall - will comply with your request Alan - don't want excessive soilage on my hands !!!!

Well the last few weekends have for me still been too cold to stand around on an airfield so I decided to embark on the task of applying rivet detail to the Sea Fury, now since this model already has it's final paint finish the tried and trusted method of a soldering iron and sharpened brass tube could not be used being far too aggressive so another method had to be found, out of interest on the full size airframe the vast majority of rivets are flush and about 1/4 inch diameter and spaced between 1 to 2 inches apart depending on where they are located,so on this 1/4 scale model that translates to 1/16 inch diameter and 1/4 to 1/2 inch apart.

The shear number to be applied onto this 115 inch span by 100 plus inch long model then dawned on me,so I needed something which would allow positioning the rivets accurately,be reasonably quick in application and of course look OK,I ended up producing jigs from 1 mm clear plastic sheet around 3/4 inch wide of various lengths, these have rows of drilled holes set at the scale rivet spacing and of a diameter which allows a 1/16 inch ( or larger for fasteners etc ) sharpened brass tube to be rotated in the hole, the clear plastic jig can be positioned accurately on the model and held by a couple of bits of masking tape, the sharpened tube can then be gently rotated in each hole, the key with this technique through practice is to achieve a good scratched rivet on the paint surface and not to apply so much pressure that you bore through the paint, the epoxy glass cloth surface and the balsa airframe below, putting a few small notches or teeth onto the end of the sharpened tube helps scratch rather than cut into the surface.

The scratched rivets can then be highlighted with a paint wash as required to get them to stand out a little more ( thanks Phil Clark and Ian Redshaw for the advice here) or they can be left as produced,a few pictures of the cowl and centre fuselage section show the results of a couple of evenings work once the technique had been established.

Hope this may be of some use and interest - there is however I have to say a lot of these damed things and I ain't touch the wing yet.

Trevor, if the LMA dished out awards for model of the year you would have 1st place for the Corsair and 2nd place for this Fury. Do everyone else a favour and don't make anything else 'till next year.

Stewart and Kenny,

Steady on guys nice as it is to read your generous comments please remember that the bulk of the work on this Sea Fury ( like most of it ) is down to Tim Simmonds, who expertly built the airframe and glass clothed/prepared the structure prior to spraying by Roy Hill, hopefully the finishing/detailing work I am now applying to this model is adding to their efforts.

The riveting process has continued over the weekend with the fuselage now complete - I have to say that although this process is very much an exercise in endurance the results are pleasing, with areas of the model now starting to look a lot like the full size depicted on the excellent photo's supplied to me by Phil Clark.

Hi All,
Have been continuing applying rivet/fastener detail along with some additional weathering to the Sea Fury, the fuselage and tail section is now complete - a couple of photos of the tail section attached.

The 3 wing sections are now being worked on and should be complete within a week or two and by then hopefully the weather will have settled to allow test flying.
